Concerto
Maki's POV
The graduation ceremony was a huge success. Everything was perfect except for one thing. It's been months since I last visited senpai in the hospital. I wanted to say that it was because I was too busy with idol work ever since that dolt Honoka convinced me to join, but that's just another excuse. I just didn't want to see her looking so weak and fragile. It looked like she might turn to dust and disappear in the wind the moment anyone touched her.
At the moment, I don't know if her life is still being held onto by the tubes and machinery connected to her while waiting for a donor, of if she's already gone through the operation.
I was scared, I guess. I've always been a coward when it comes to expressing my own feelings, and while everyone in μ's helped me get better at doing so, it's still hard for me to be honest with myself in the end.
Tucking some of my hair behind my ear, I place my hand on the door to the music room where it all started.
After Honoka's send off to μ's on the roof, I split off from the others to help sort through my thoughts a bit. It was Nico that realized I wasn't feeling right, and decided to round up the others to leave me alone. She might be insufferably annoying at times, but she really comes through when it matters.
Still, my mind's in a whirl and I just still can't decide what to do. I had almost asked Nozomi for her Tarot card readings, but even then I couldn't bring myself to formulate the words.
What should I do?
Should I go to the hospital after this?
What should I say if I do see senpai again?
What if she's still waiting?
What if she's in a coma?
What if she's...
No! I can't think like that!
I just have to believe that she'll pull through.
Suddenly, the nostalgic sound of a violin comes drifting through the closed doors.
This is... the beginning to Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata.
It can't be-!
Pulling open the door, I step inside of the music room to see a familiar figure sitting by the window in a wheelchair. The sun shining through the windows makes her skin almost glow.
My voice comes out strained as a single word escapes my lips.
"Senpai..."
Readers' POV
"Senpai..."
Lowering my bow and violin, I turn towards the entrance to the music room to see Maki-chan standing there with her mouth hanging open in shock.
A smile makes it way onto my lips as I stare at my underclassman. It's been so long, and she's just as stunning as when I first met her, if not more.
"I figured you'd come here if I started playing, Maki-chan. This certainly reminds me of when we first met," I say.
"(L/N)-senpai..." Maki whispers as she takes a few tentative steps towards me. "You're..."
"Hehe. I wanted to surprise you a bit. Looks like it worked a bit too well. Anyways, don't I get a welcome back hug or something?" I ask, spreading my arms out.
"I..." The red-haired girl gulps. "Senpai... I..."
Suddenly, Maki rushes towards me and envelopes me in a crushing embrace.
"Welcome back, senpai."
Her voice quivers as she chokes back a sob.
"I'm back."
