AN: Of course I wasn't just going to leave this pairing alone after the previous one. There was barely any character interaction after all. So here it is, the continuation.
Warning: As to the nature of Another, there will be death and gore
I Won't Let You Die
"MEI! KOUICHI!" Screaming into the roaring flames, I stumble through the ruined halls of the inn looking for the pair of teenagers.
I wince in pain at the stab wound I had sustained. It was almost like the world was ending. This curse had driven all the students mad with fear and they suddenly started killing each other after learning that the curse would be lifted if the 'dead one' is sent back to the dead.
"A curse..."
Letting out a mirthless chuckle, I think back to the words Mei Misaki said to me when we first met. At the time, I didn't think of it as anything but small town superstition, but... In just a single month the students and relatives of class 3-3 began dying in strange accidents or by committing suicide.
All of that culminated into this class trip into the mountains which I had decided to observe since I was getting a bad feeling about it. My gut was right and now everything's gone to hell.
My vision swims and I'm forced to lean against the wall to steady myself. I tighten my grip on my gun, which brings a small amount of comfort, before I push off and continue my search.
I have to find them. I have to protect them. Mei is innocent. She isn't the 'dead one'. I have to fix this. I can't let her die.
Gritting my teeth, I push forward through the fire and the smoke and come across a pair of students. One male, one female. They don't notice me, probably because the girl's viciously stabbing the guy.
Without even batting an eyelash I fire a shot into the back of the girl's head.
They're already too far gone.
Keep going. Don't stop. You have to find her. Make sure she's okay.
Where?! Where are they?! Dammit!
My lungs are burning and the heat of the flames aren't doing anything to ease the burning pain from the hole in my side. Even though I wrapped it up with a makeshift tourniquet and bandages, it still hurt like hell.
I'm definitely handing in my badge after all this is over.
Surprisingly enough, over the month we've known each other Mei, Kouichi and I managed to grow quite close. The pair was almost always together. Unfortunately, during that time my feelings for Mei grew and grew. It was almost unbearable seeing the two of them together constantly, but I knew it was for the best. I was an adult, and she was a child.
So I'll settle for watching over and protecting the two of them like an older sister. That's why, no matter what, I have to find them and get them out of this hell.
Eventually, after combing through as much of the burning hotel as I could, I stumble outside into the pouring rain.
They're not inside. They must've escaped.
Repeating that they had to be okay over and over again inside my head, I catch sight of a pair of students standing beside what looks like a storage shed and a pile of fallen logs.
It's them. It's them! They're alive! Mei and Kouichi are alive!
An ecstatic feeling envelops my chest as I begin limping towards them, only to see Mei raise a pickax above her head as if readying to swing down on something.
"Mei! Kouichi!" I cry out, hoping that at least one of them would hear me.
Luckily, Kouichi turns around and sees me approaching.
"Miss (L/N)!"
He rushes over to my side and drapes my left arm over his shoulder.
"Thanks, Kouichi," I manage to utter out weakly.
"Thank goodness you're okay."
"I'm okay as I can be with a hole in my side."
The two of us walk over to where Mei is waiting. Her eye patch is off, revealing her hetero chromatic eyes. She offers me a small smile when she sees me.
When she first showed her different colored eyes to me, I of course reacted with surprise. However, it turns out that her one green eye is actually a doll's eye because her real eye rotted away due to a disease.
"Detective, I'm glad you're safe," she says.
"You two as well," I reply before looking down at the figure buried under the pile of logs. "Is that, Miss Minami?"
The beautiful brunette with half her body crushed by the wood is none other than class 3-3's teaching assistant.
Slowly, I begin to peace everything together.
During the time Mei showed me her eye, she said that she could see death. That combined with the fact that the only way to break the curse is by sending the dead back to death and how Mei is holding a pickax can only mean that...
"Reiko, you're the extra one?"
It was meant to be a rhetorical question, but the woman responds nonetheless.
"Please, no! Don't do this!" She sobs.
I see. I should've seen it earlier. Class 3-3 was the only class to have a teaching assistant and the number of students were correct.
Damn! If I had just realized everything sooner then... All of this could've been prevented.
Glancing at Kouichi, I can see him gritting his teeth and looking away. Meanwhile Mei seems to have a sad expression on her beautiful face. She's certainly learned to emote more compared to when we first met.
I still remember the moment she first smiled at me because of a stupid pun I made. It was dazzling and angelic.
Alright. I guess this is it, then.
"Mei, Kouichi. I'll be the one to end this," I say, leveling my pistol at the woman who's weakly clawing at the mud, trying to pull herself out of her entrapment. "You two don't have to look."
To my surprise the two of them shake their head and grab my arm, helping me steady my shaking aim.
A single shot rings out in the night accompanied by the resounding boom of thunder.
"It's over..." Kouichi mumbles, sinking onto his knees.
"Thank you, (Y/N)."
Suddenly I find myself being hugged by Mei. My wound burns in response as she presses her body into mine, but I fight through the pain.
Smiling, I gently stroke her head.
"I told you, didn't I? I won't let you die."
