It was nightfall by the time Demetri and Callie made it to Volterra, which was more than beneficial in regards to keeping a low profile. Demetri wrung out the water from his sopping wet cloak, face scrunched up in annoyance," You couldn't have just used your powers and got us here quickly? Instead of making me swim..."
Callie grinned innocently, all to amused with how wound up he was," Well, yeah, but where's the fun in that?"
The tracker rolled his eyes, folding his cloak over his elbow joint," You're lucky that I like you as much as I do."
The brunette cooed in exaggerated appreciation, pinching his cheek between her thumb and index finger with a pouty lip," Awww, you wuv me so much!" Demetri tried his best to suppress a smile but to his dismay his stoic façade cracked," Oh and you're smiling! I knew it!"
He sighed," C'mon, Sherlock Holmes, Aro will be waiting for us."
-------------------------------------------
As always, the castle was completely silent. Anyone would have assumed that Volterra had been abandoned judging by the lack of warmth and light; that was essentially the point - the Volturi weren't exactly fans of unexpected guests. Demetri closed the door behind them briskly, shrugging on his damp cloak - trying not to cringe as it stuck to his drying shirt - before clasping his hands behind the small of his back," Follow me."
Callie quirked a brow at his sudden change in demeanour, switching from playful to serious in a blink of an eye. Were all the guards like that? She assumed so. The soles of her shoes clacked against the smooth stone floor, echoing off the walls; it cut through the still air like thunder. The corridor seemed to go on forever, leading down a spiral of stairs before reaching two trails of torches. The flames blazed against the shadowed surroundings, almost blinding. Demetri spared short glances from the corner of his eye, checking his mate over; he wanted to smile as her features flitted from shock to awe as they came to the throne room doors.
"Demetri," Felix's jovial voice sounded from the shadows, as his towering form sauntered out to greet his friend. Callie stiffened, burgundy irises scanning him from head to toe; she recognised him from before, when the small blonde girl attacked her in the woods. But there was something else she couldn't quite put her finger on...she felt like she knew him," It's good to see you're back...in one piece."
Demetri sniffed slightly with a smirk,"It's good to see you too - you've already met Calista."
Felix nodded, almost hesitant when his eyes locked with hers. There was something brewing behind his eyes, but it was unclear as to what. Fear? Anger? Maybe a cocktail of both. Why he would be fearful of her was confusing - had she really made that much of an impression when she first met him?
"Aro is waiting for you both," Felix stated curtly, straightening his posture as he walked towards the two heavy doors that separated them from the rest of the coven,"He's very intrigued by you, Cal."
Cal? Where the hell did that come from? Before she could question him, Felix opened both doors with a powerful shove. The wood creaked, sweeping open. The trio stepped forward into the room, Callie squared her shoulders, head raised; she took in an unnecessary breath to steady herself.
The Three Volturi kings sat perched on their respective thrones. Callie had never directly encountered the leaders, at least not in any circumstance she could recall, but they seemed to live up to their reputations: The male furthest to the left, Marcus, seemed to be hollow, empty in his expressions and mannerisms - he hadn't even raised his eyes from the marbled ground despite their entrance; To the far right sat Caius, the blond who had been perpetually angry seemingly since birth; and in the centre, there was Aro and his unnerving smile.
