"Are they ready?" Darius quizzed, the heels of his shoes clacking on the iron steps as he descended down further into the basement. Howls and growls filled the air, growing louder as the scent of another vampire poured into their nostrils, the rattling of chains slithering across the stone floor like ravenous serpents.
"It keeps trying to break through the restraints - we've lost two men already -" Darius shut his secretary up with a wave, too focused on his beasts to care about the casualties. She pursed her lips, diligently following after her sire as he stepped down onto the lower level.
"Vampires are everywhere - these creatures are few and far between nowadays," Darius' features resembled that of an awe-struck child as he neared the cage wall. The response was the more rapid tugging of chains, as the beast inside began to tug at its restraints to no avail. It's hot breath became large clouds in the cool air, amber eyes shining through the gloom," How many did you get?"
"Our teams say 20, they don't travel in packs which made it much more difficult to track them," His secretary replied, skin crawling as the beast's eyes followed her movements; for once the predator felt like prey.
"One could cause great damage on its own - 20 is more than enough," Darius broke his stare at the creature, turning his back to the cage. In an instant, a giant paw struck the bars, too large to fit between the slats; it's long claws, closer to talons, sprung from within the coarse fur on it's toes making a futile swipe at the air.
"Fascinating..." Darius uttered, undeterred by the fact that the wolf was more than able to devour him - and would given half the chance," Have we got a solution to the whole hunger situation?"
"The witches we found are working on something - they say it'll control them, you'll be like their Alpha," Darius smirked at the thought, patting the secretary on the shoulder in gratitude," If I may be so bold, Sir...all this work and effort for one woman, is she worth it?"
Darius quirked a brow, eyes narrowing slightly,"Very bold of you to assume that she's just 'one woman' - my Calista is an army under one skin, a one woman army, with beauty that could rival Aphrodite herself..."
The Secretary bowed her head in submission, it was clear that that was a nerve she shouldn't have pressed. Darius continued: "You know, even as a human I found her beautiful - I wanted her to be my wife, but she wouldn't marry me...so I made sure she could never leave me again - but the little minx got away."
He felt over the sealed crack in his neck, now more like an uneven seam. A chuckled left his lips," She tore my head clean off - I was angry, at first, since she tried to kill me, but then again, no use crying over spilled milk."
With that he turned on his heels, making his way back up the levels of iron steps, looking down onto the rows of cages that lined the floor. He grinned," She'll come back to me - in pieces."
To be continued...
