A large brown tabby cat was peacefully sleeping on a pillow resting on the white round table you were sitting at. Many others cats were busy lazily walking around, playing with the toys scattered in the room or lounging by the window, basking in the warm sunlight.
A long week of heavy work had just passed and you decided a break was more than well deserved. Spending the afternoon at a cat café, sipping hot cocoa while surrounded by your favorite animals, seemed like the perfect way to relax.
Strangely enough, you were one of the few costumers present that day. A couple, of what seemed tourists, sat at the other corner of the room, partaking in hushed conversations and filming and giggling at the cat by their side as it played with the fake mouse at the end of a string. But that was it.
A sudden gush of cold air caused a shiver to run down your spine, as the entrance door was swung open by a new costumer. A soft female voice greeted the employees. The sound seemed oddly familiar but, not thinking much of it, you focused on the words of the book in front of you, taking a sip of your hot cocoa. A few minutes went by, then the girl walked quietly into the room. She stopped right away, bending over to pet a black cat that was purring at her feet.
Something within you, was screaming at you not to look up, but going against your instinct, you slowly raised your eyes. The scene in front of you was familiar. Long blonde hair with bangs stopping right above her eyes, covered parts of her face since she was leaning down. Big brown eyes, adorned with old school glasses, had a gleam in them as she petted the small cat.
You immediately averted your eyes, going back to the book. Taking deep slow breathes, you tried to calm the pounding of your heart. Old memories coming to the forefront of your mind.
"I can't do this anymore." You stood in Lisa's dorm room, staring at a spot on the ground.
"What?" her body froze in place, not even a hint of the big smile that previously brightened her features as she talked about her plans for the week.
You sighed, "We need to break up."
Lisa exhaled heavily through her nose, still unmoving. "I don't understand."
Taking a deep breath, you met her eyes and grabbed her hands with yours. "I'm only happy when I'm with you. Once you leave, I'm left with nothing. I am nothing. And that's not how I want to live." you paused, "I need to learn how to be happy on my own and I can't do it if you're still in my life."
You dropped her hands and took a few steps back. As no answer came, you turned to leave, but were stopped by a hand harshly grabbing your shoulder and pulling you back.
Lisa glared at you with fire in her eyes, "Are you seriously about to throw away everything we have? Everything we built together?" she repeatedly hit your chest, a few tears already escaping her eyes.
"You said you're happy with me, so why can't that be enough, huh? You're just being selfish. You're a selfish fool!"
Lisa must have noticed you when she got up, because her posture turned rigid and she held her breath.
What were you supposed to do, look up and say hello? Ignore each other's existence and pretend like you didn't have a past together? Had she been a simple ex, you would've done just that with no problem. But there was nothing simple about her.
You knew the moment you set eyes on her for the first time, that she was the one. The last woman you'll ever love, the one you were meant to spend the rest of your life with and she felt the same with you. So you weren't about to ruin your chance at reconnecting with her.
