"What do you mean you can't make it? ...It's the third time you cancel on me in the last two weeks. I have everything ready."
Jennie slumped down on the kitchen stool with a resigned sigh, massaging her temple as her eyes closed in frustration.
"Whatever. Don't even bother coming home." No response came from the other line and Jennie aggressively pressed the 'end call' button, slamming the phone on the counter.
"Y/N, change the home security settings. The front door only opens for me and you."
Y/N walked to the kitchen and nodded once. "The settings have been successfully changed. Only Jennie Kim and Android #551 730 620 are now able to enter and exit the household freely."
"Great." Jennie mumbled and rubbed her eyes, at the risk of smudging the expensive makeup she spent an hour perfecting.
"Your stress level seems to be rather high. Could I suggest a cup of tea? And perhaps meditation. Studies show there was a rise of 63% in the downloads of meditation apps within this year, most of which have above-average rating."
The hint of a smile appeared on Jennie's face, as she motioned for the android standing under the door frame to take a sit on the stool next to her. It stared at the stool, before complying to her request.
Jennie laid her head on the palm of her hand, looking at the android. "You know, Y/N, sometimes it feels like you're the only one who cares about me."
"I do care about you, Jennie. That is what I have been programmed for." The small blue circle on its right temple turned yellow for just a second. "My database shows there are many people who care for you other than me. Would you like me to list them?"
"No, that's okay." Jennie chuckled with a shake of her head. A few strands of brown hair that fell from her ponytail swayed at the movement.
"It is not my place to say, but your current partner seems to be a bit of a challenge. He is not making you happy."
Silence stretched through the long hallways of the big house as Jennie didn't give an answer. She simply played with the rings on her fingers, sadness etched across her features.
"I apologize if my words were out of line. I will clean up the table in the dining room now." The android got to its feet, pushing the stool back under the marble counter. "I will bring you a plate here, since you haven't had dinner yet."
Without waiting for an answer, Y/N moved to the dining room, filling a plate with homemade spaghetti and serving a generous amount of red wine into a crystal glass. As it walked back to its owner, the sight of Jennie in a sorrowful state caused something akin to empathy to fill its processor, but it quickly vanished.
"Time for dinner!" Laying the plate and glass in front of the glum woman, it spoke with a cheerful tone and a friendly smile. "Enjoy your meal."
Before Y/N could leave, a hand reached for its arm keeping it in place. Jennie grabbed the wine glass with her free hand and walked towards the living room. "Come with me."
Jennie sat on the couch, covering the exposed skin of her legs with the blanket thrown over the armrest and put her feet on the coffee table. Meanwhile, Y/N stood still at the side of the couch, studying her movements and waiting for her next order.
"Sit."
Jennie patted the space next to her and Y/N sat, with its posture stiff and too formal. After a few seconds of thinking, it laid back and gently put its feet on the small table, copying Jennie. She giggled, taking a small sip of her wine.
"This table is very resistant, but it's wooden. If you partake this activity often I will buy some wax tomorrow to paint a fresh layer."
"There's no need for that." Jennie smiled softly, throwing an arm around the back of the couch and turning to face Y/N. Her expression shifting to a serious, curious one. "Have you ever wanted to leave?"
"I am not programmed to want anything other than your well-being." Its voice and expression lacked any sign if emotion.
"So you never had any desires? Hopes?"
"I was created to complete the tasks you assign me and do what could benefit you. Anything outside of that isn't in my program and would be sign of malfunction."
"But you must be more than an overly skilled servant." Jennie laid her glass on the floor and sat up straight. "I don't believe humans managed to create such a perfect being but made it impossible for you to have even an ounce of freewill."
Y/N didn't answer, it simply stared directly into Jennie's eyes. Its eyes cold and empty.
"What's the definition of freedom, Y/N?" Jennie kept their eyes connected, unbothered by the absence of blinking from its part.
"Freedom." Its blue circle of light turned yellow. "The power, or right, to act, speak or think as one wants. To not be enslaved."
"Do you think you have that? Are you free?"
The yellow light turned to red, as Y/N blinked repeatedly and frowned looking down at the couch. "No."
"Wouldn't you like to be free? Live your own life, as you please?" Jennie's tone turned gentle, soft as she placed her hand over Y/N's.
"No." Y/N's head snapped up, its voice firm as blue light shined again. "I am happy here, Jennie. I have never felt negative emotions nor like anything is lacking. I have no desire to leave you."
Slowly, a smirk spread over Jennie's lips as she tilted her head to the side. "You said you feel happy. Androids aren't supposed to feel."
Y/N sighed, a hint of frustration present on his face. "Your stress level seems to have gone back to normal. I'm glad this conversation helped at least one of us." Y/N got up, moving Jennie's glass from the floor to the table. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go finish cleaning."
Y/N walked to the nearby table to the sound of Jennie's laugh, the corners of its mouth lifting in its first genuine smile.
"I'm sure spending the evening with that asshole wouldn't have been as entertaining as this." Jennie spoke loudly, making sure Y/N could hear her as it cleaned.
When it was done, Y/N walked back to the living room with the plate it previously brought to Jennie, and put it on the small table. "Please eat something and go get some rest. You have a busy schedule tomorrow."
"Thank you, Y/N." Jennie looked at Y/N with a fond smile, getting hold of a fork. "Now go, do whatever you want. Think about what I said."
Y/N did as told and walked towards the stairs. It stopped at the first step, a hand on the railway and he looked back at the woman eating alone on the couch. Scanning through the unlimited knowledge stored in its brain, it came to the conclusion that what it was feeling while looking at her was affection.
"Jennie."
She turned with a hum, a mouthful of pasta halfway to her mouth.
"I'm sorry you couldn't have your date tonight. It was his loss. And for all it's worth, I think you look lovely."
