Nothing but darkness stretched for an unknown distance all around me. As I kept my mind empty all my eyes could focus on were the small white stars millions of kilometers away that adorned the universe like a spurt of white paint on a black canvas. My own reflection against the thick window glass almost got lost in the nothingness.
A light clear of throat broke the spell that space had onto me. Rosé stood at my side with a gentle smile, following my gaze to the black infinite sea. She was wearing casual clothes, meaning her shift was over for the day and it was probably close to dinner time. Keeping track of time in space was tricky.
"Missing Earth?" She turned to look me, the sight of her warm brown eyes enough to make my body relax.
"There's nothing for me on Earth to miss." I smiled and after checking that nobody was around us, I reached for her hand giving it a light squeeze. "Everything I need is here."
Rosé smiled sheepishly, a pink tint covering her cheeks as she looked down at the ground. She stole a look at the empty hallway and then, getting on her tiptoes, she planted a kiss on my cheek.
"Grab dinner and meet at my room in 20?"
I nodded and gently pushed her in the direction of the mess hall. I watched her leave, smiling when she looked back, and waited a minute or so before following her steps.
After getting to the cafeteria and taking my time choosing what to eat, I grabbed a burger and a bottle of water then walked to the living quarters. Rosé's room was in the far end of the poorly lit hallway, just a couple of doors away from mine.
Once I got there, I pressed the doorbell underneath the room number while balancing the small tray and bottle in one hand. In a matter of seconds an "open" could be heard from the other side and the metallic door hissed open, revealing Rosé sitting cross legged on her bed in the corner of the room.
The door closed right after I walked in, granting Rosé and I some deserved privacy. She smiled at me as I sat next to her, her cheeks puffed up because of the bite of pizza still in her mouth. I chuckled pinching her cheek and earning a groan of protest in response.
"Had a good day today?" I leaned back on the wall the bed was pushed against and took a bite from my burger.
Rosé hummed, her eyes lighting up in excitement as she swallowed her bite with a sip of water. "So good. We managed to grow a new type of plant that might survive Mars' atmosphere. It's not sure yet but it's a huge step forward."
"That's great!" I smiled and reached for her hand, giving it a squeeze. "Good job."
"What about you? How was your day?" Rosé placed her tray on the floor and turned to face me, her head propped up on her hands.
"No good news unfortunately. Ship Icarus is still making no contact and they fell off the radar completely just a few hours ago."
"Still? It's been, what, a week now, of radio silence?" Rosé furrowed her eyebrows, her features showing worry.
I heaved a sigh, laying my tray on the desk and looking out the small square window. "I know, we can't figure out what's happening. But I don't wanna think about that now." I wrapped my arms around Rosé, bringing her close and laid my head on her shoulder.
Her arms moved to rest around my neck and after kissing the top of my head, she fell onto the mattress leaving us to lay side by side.
After a few minutes of silence, Rosé huffed, staring up at the ceiling. "I wish there was something fun to do in this place."
"You know what's a fun activity?" I smirked and moved to hover over her body, my arms at each side of her head. "This." I leaned down, pressing my lips against hers and smiling when she giggled into the kiss.
Her hands automatically found their way into my hair, threading my hair in her fingers as she pulled me closer. My heart was beating so fast it seemed it could burst through my chest at any moment and warmth engulfed my whole body.
We let our lips part with ragged breaths and I leaned down, connecting our foreheads.
Rosé smiled, pecking my lips. "That is a fun activity."
I chuckled, looking into her warm brown eyes feeling butterflies rage in my stomach. "You're so pretty."
Rosé smiled, her cheeks already flushed from the kiss, and wrapped her legs around my abdomen, scratching lightly the back of my head. "We don't get many moments like this recently. I missed this."
I played with a strand of her blonde hair, that was spread wildly on the bed and kissed the palm of her hand. "I'm sorry. I've been too focused on work."
Rosé shook her head with a loving smile and caressed the side of my face. "You don't have to be sorry, I wasn't calling you out. There's a lot going on."
I hummed, leaning into her touch and closed my eyes. "Are you worried? Isn't your friend Lisa on Icarus?"
Rosé's smile faltered but she forced it to stay. Her eyes moved to the ceiling as they covered in a layer of tears. "She is, but I'm sure she's fine. Soon you'll get news from them and everything will go well."
"Yeah. I'm sure everything will be fine." I kissed her forehead, feeling guilty from bringing up a sensitive subject and upsetting her.
Rosé wrapped her arms around my neck, bringing me closer and buried her face in the crook of my neck. I hugged her the best I could given the position we were in, running my hands up and down her sides as I heard her sniffle. "Don't think about it, Rosie. I'll make sure we find them and she gets home safe."
She nodded and moved back, granting me a good look of her tears-stained face. I dried her tears with the sleeves of my shirt and connecter our lips in a soft quick kiss. "Let's go for a walk?"
Rosé let out a weak "yes" and we both got up from the bed, throwing the remains of our dinner into the trash can. I grabbed her hand, intertwining our fingers and earning a small smile from her.
Before we could reach the door, there was a tremor throughout the whole ship. I held onto Rosé's waist and kept my balance by leaning onto the wall. We managed to get the door opened at the same time the electricity died and the code red siren started blaring.
With the emergency red lights turned on, the metallic corridors became an eerie sight full of people running out of their rooms to their designated position during emergencies.
Rosé and I shared a look before running towards the control room, where the main team hastily tried to assess the damage and find a solution.
We walked to the Captain, who was screaming orders at the mechanics team. When our eyes met, he dismissed them and walked towards us, meeting us halfway.
"What's happening?"
"Icarus is back. As soon as they docked to the Mothership it started malfunctioning and we're getting no response from the team."
Rosé gripped my hand tightly, her chest raising more rapidly with heavy breaths. She tried to keep her expression neutral but her eyes were filled with fear and worry.
The captain looked around, before moving in closer with a fraught look and kept his voice low.
"Y/N, we fear they brought something back with them. Something not human. And it got onto our ship."
