The silence in the room was almost deafening. You sat alone on the couch of your apartment, staring blankly at the picture in your hands.
Every time you walk into these four walls it's like something switches inside you. The happy-go-lucky guy that everyone knows becomes the shell of what you once were.
It all started because of her.
You and Lisa met years ago and used to be very close friends. There wasn't a day you didn't talk, you were always at each other's side through thick and thin, she almost moved in with you at one point.
Her friends always teased you, talking about how you two were gonna end up married with kids and neither of you ever denied it. You would just shyly smile at each other and move on.
Then everything started changing.
She met a guy at a party, said he was the best thing that ever happened to her. You thought it was the alcohol talking but couldn't help the aching in your chest.
After that she started spending more time with him, neglecting you and the rest of your friends. For them it wasn't such a big deal but for you it was a huge life change.
One night she called you crying, he had too much to drink and got violent. You drove as fast as you could to her place and he ran away as soon as he saw you coming. You really wanted to follow him and teach him a lesson but she begged you to stay, to not leave her so you did. You stayed and held her until she ran out of tears.
Things escalated after that, maybe because of how vulnerable the situation was, but after years of tension and subtle touches everything came crumbling down.
You can still feel her smooth skin against yours, her warm breath against your neck as she shivered from your touch. The three words that left her mouth right before she closed her eyes and let sleep engulf her.
But you can also remember how it felt waking up to a cold bed, how she couldn't meet your eyes when you walked into the kitchen. How she asked you to leave.
She went back to him after that. She wouldn't answer you texts and your calls and after a while you just gave up.
She still calls for you whenever her boyfriend drinks too much or leaves a few days for work
"Lisa, I don't think I can keep doing this." You said while putting your clothes back on, not being capable to meet her eyes.
"I'm not telling you to stay." She stayed stoic, staring right ahead. It felt like someone just stabbed your heart.
"Stop calling me then."
"Stop answering. Stop coming." She turned to look at you, with no emotions in her eyes. You didn't recognize her, that wasn't the girl you knew and fell in love with.
You had barely made it to your car when you broke down. You were crying, sobbing alone in a parking lot and you never felt more pathetic.
And now here you are, by yourself in an empty apartment, feeling completely broken and alone. You dropped the picture frame on the ground, the glass broke but you couldn't bring yourself to care.
You closed your eyes and laid your head on one of the pillows, feeling a single tear run down your cheek.
You knew you had to let her go but if she was to call you right know, you would run right back into her arms. But for one more time you lied to yourself.
That was the last time.
