Arthit walks with excitement right after he gets out of the cab on a Sunday night. On his way over to the hill of the forgotten, Arthit ducks under of what remains of a fence, grunting when his bag gets stuck along the way. This night brings a certain feeling inside him which he cannot contain. This night is an important one, a special one for him, for Arthit had been waiting for a year for a star to fall from the sky.
He picks a spot – his usual one every year, and watches the sky after he takes a seat on the grassed ground. He had laid out a blanket, took out the snacks from his bag. There was only one thing to do; wait.
Arthit stares up at the sky. There’s a cluster of stars peppering the night sky, but Arthit is searching for a specific one.
The hill of the forgotten was once part of a small town where a small number of people had lived. Five years ago, during a meteor shower, the town was left devastated when a huge chunk of a meteor separated from its origin heading towards the said town.
The impact had left a crater together with the chaos. Arthit had watched the meteor shower that night, following the trails of the stars in awe. He was back in his hometown for the summer break, and his neighborhood provided the best place to view the falling stars from the sky.
Arthit was there after the impact. He remembered standing a few meters away, watching in surprise and devastation as he looked over where the town was once was.
And in the middle of it all, glowing in the center of the crater the meteor had created was a guy.
Arthit perks up when he notices the first sign. There’s a glint in his eyes as he watches with a smile on his face, and with great anticipation, he whispers, “Welcome home.”
Every year, Kongpob falls from the sky in the form of a star. Watching it happen always brings amazement to Arthit. It’s magical, and it’s as if time stops for a while as he traces the falling star with his eyes.
Arthit stands up from where he’s sitting, clutching the necklace on his neck made from a fragment of the cosmos, gifted to him by Kongpob himself. The star flickers as if communicating to him, so Arthit chuckles with watery eyes.
And when the light faintly dims, slowly vanishing as it gets closer to the ground, Arthit finds himself standing a few meters away from Kongpob with a huge smile on his face.
Kongpob stands in front of him with a faint glow surrounding him. Arthit thinks it’s beautiful, something out of the bounds of imagination.
They had met five years ago when Arthit had decided to check out the guy he had seen with unconscious invitation. There were a lot of questions in his mind at that time. Arthit had stood in the middle of the carnage left by the meteor’s impact, leaving the town stinking with death and chaos. But Arthit had not panicked, too endeared by the embodiment of the stars in front of him.
The origin of Kongpob was unknown to him, and when Arthit had heard the sirens heading towards the town, he had made the decision of directing Kongpob towards a safer space.
Kongpob hadn’t spoken a word to him at that night when Arthit had been dragging him behind a hill.
It was a fateful interaction, already predetermined by the universe to happen. But Arthit wasn’t aware of this and neither does Kongpob.
The star would later introduce himsel revealing nothing about his origin. “I’m part of the cosmos,” Kongpob had said, leaving no other explanation.
