A Brand New Day

Arthit stirs in his sleep, somewhat aware of the presence beside him.

The early morning air fogs his balcony’s glass door, and the bluish tint outside lets him know that it’s still dawn.

He wasn’t able to sleep immediately last night, too busy calming down his nerves to actually fall into the comfort of sleeping. Kongpob’s presence proves to be something Arthit hasn’t learn to cope with yet.

It was their first night together – as a couple.

To this day, Arthit still hasn’t wrapped his mind around the fact that he’s in a relationship now, and that the junior who he once got annoyed with was now at the top of his recent calls list.

Not that he was regretting it.

Far by regretting it, to be honest.

Kongpob made him want to try harder.

He stares at the ceiling, the duvet wrapped around his chest, hugging it like a lifeline.

The person beside him is still fast asleep, and although Kongpob has mentioned he do early runs in the morning, his junior told him he’d take a break today.

Arthit casts a glimpse towards the sleeping form next to him.

Kongpob’s body is faced against him, and even with poor lighting Arthit can perfectly trace Kongpob’s features with his eyes.

He’s never seen Kongpob this vulnerable; with his relaxed face, slightly open mouth. Arthit takes it all in because he knows he’ll be too shy to actually look Kongpob in the face when he wakes up. So, from the slant of his boyfriend’s eyes, Arthit studies, to the bridge of his nose, the curve of his lips, and how Kongpob slowly breathes in and out.

Arthit doesn’t have an excuse for what he’s doing. Kongpob is his boyfriend now, and he’s sleeping on his bed, and Arthit really can’t take his eyes off of Kongpob for now.

He reaches a hand gingerly, breathing a chuckle when Kongpob scrunched his nose when Arthit taps it with a finger.

The following days after being a couple sent Arthit into this rollercoaster of anxiety and nerves where he constantly thinks of what to do, or what to talk about whenever he’s with Kongpob. Sometimes, Arthit’s hand movements needed to be calculated, because he himself doesn’t know the extent to where his body would betray him.

But with this, with Kongpob sleeping beside him, quiet and peaceful, Arthit can think freely.

He can admire Kongpob’s beauty without bursting into a blushing mess. Arthit can smile without being teased by his boyfriend. He can actually look at Kongpob for as long as he wants.

Arthit wishes he can do this when Kongpob is awake.

But they’re still starting, and Arthit is still finding his place in this relationship, and there are a lot of things running in his mind and . . .

He closes his eyes when Kongpob rustles in his sleep.

Arthit thinks he woke up Kongpob, but when he feels an arm wrapping around his middle, he freezes.

They slept side by side last night, and although Kongpob teased him a couple of times on how he would like to cuddle, his boyfriend respected Arthit’s wishes.

He slowly cracks one eye open, and he’s finally able to breathe when he hears the faint snore coming from the man beside him.

    Arthit sighs deeply.

Kongpob’s body feels warm against him, and Arthit has to bite his lips from smiling too hard because he likes it; he likes the feeling of Kongpob being this near to him.

And his heart starts beating fast in his chest once again because although they have shared a kiss together, he’s never really had the opportunity to have this kind of moment where Arthit gets the affection he doesn’t know he needed and wanted without having the other tease him to death.

So, he relishes the moment to his own. One of these days, Arthit would get to share this with Kongpob awake, but for now . . .

He braves himself and covers Kongpob’s hand on his waist with his own.

It may be a simple act, but to Arthit it’s everything. It’s a step to what he’ll be able to do in the future, and to him it’s all that matters.

Kongpob’s hand feels . . . perfect – like Arthit was meant to hold it.

And it isn’t long before Arthit’s hand betrays him, and his thumb starts running circles on the back of Kongpob’s hand.

Arthit momentarily closes his eyes to feel.

He means to check on his boyfriend, but when he opens his eyes Kongpob is staring back at him with a warm smile.

    He freezes.

His heart beat accelerates further, and Arthit thinks he’s going to have a heart attack.

Arthit’s mind goes into overdrive. With Kongpob awake, his defense mechanism kicks in. Should he brush Kongpob’s hand and roll his eyes? Should he roll on the side and ignore Kongpob? Should he ignore Kongpob’s looks and play sleep instead?

He doesn’t do any of that.

Kongpob’s stares were always intense. And if you fail to look away even for a second, you’ll find yourself getting lost in them.

But with the early morning, with Kongpob having just woken up, his eyes reveal a certain truth Arthit has never seen before.

There’s none of those things Arthit has associated Kongpob’s stares with. No hunger, no teasing, no passion.

There, in Kongpob’s eyes, Arthit notices is a warmth he selfishly thinks is for him and him only.

Kongpob’s eyes look soft, and when his boyfriend’s lips quirked up slightly, Arthit immediately feels like he’s sharing this moment with Kongpob now.

Arthit opens his mouth to say something, but his boyfriend beat him to it.

“Good morning, P’,” Kongpob’s voice sends shiver down his spine, and Arthit can’t help but wanting to hear more.

“Good morning,” he replies, and the hand on his middle shifts, effectively holding his own.

And as Kongpob laces their fingers together, his boyfriend inches forward, seemingly hesitating on what he should do, and Arthit closes his eyes in anticipation, his heart continuously beating hard in his chest.

He feels a light kiss on his forehead, and when Arthit opens his eyes for the second time, he just knew.

He just knew he’ll want this for the days to come.
