Species name: giant inkling

Evolved from: giant squid

Giant inklings are, as the name suggests, much larger than a normal inkling. Based on my research, inklings stand at about five feet even. Giant inklings, on the other hand, are easily six feet tall. They are rather thin but still have more natural strength than the average inkling. Their tentacles are extremely long and thin, normally a reddish-orange in color. A small spike is attached to each suction cup.

At a quick glance, giant inklings appear similar to colossal inklings. There are, however, several key differences between the two. For starters, giant inklings tend to be a bit thinner than colossal inklings. Scientists have discovered based on some rare fossils of ancient cephalopods that this is probably due to their different body types. The creatures humans called "giant squids" was one of the largest cephalopods of the ancient, pre-seakind era. In fact, it has been suggested that this creature was one of their inspiration for the mythical Krakens. However, they are in fact not the largest of the ancient squids! That status belongs to the colossal squid.

Well...actually it depends on how much of the squid they measured anyway. As all young cephalopods know, we judge the largest among us by their height. Humans decided to only measure the mantle, or body, of the squids. Some salvaged texts seem to suggest that they did this because the tentacles of captured specimens could change size. They could be stretched to increase the length, or sometimes shrivel up as the body dried out. Now, it is not surprising that humans weren't intelligent enough to come up with proper preservation techniques. Due to this, they appear to have decided to measure the part of the body that did not have the capability to change drastically in size. Thus, the colossal squid was designated as the largest cephalopod in existence based on the length of the body alone. When the length of the tentacles is taken into consideration, the giant squid was the largest.
