"Oh God. Alex." I whisper, staring his blood covered leg.

"Wasn't fast enough." He says with a slight chuckle.

"Alex." Is all I can say as tears fall, and a lump forms in my throat.

He looks up at me with those soulful eyes of his, and his callused hand gently wipes the tear from my cheek.

"I love you, Jackie. I...I'm sorry...to leave like this." He says, his breath becoming slightly raspy.

"Alex....I can't survive without you." I whisper, sobbing.

"Yes you can. Be strong. Stay smart. Survive this world, for me." He says, his voice weak.

He smiles at me, but I can tell he's afraid, I can see it in his eyes.

His breathing is now uneven and raspy.

"I'll see you in another life, my love." He whispers, his voice barely strong enough to be heard.

I can't say anything, but can only stare as the light fades from his beautiful eyes.

"A-alex." I whimper, sobbing into his shirt.

I feel his body goes limp, and his chest stop rising.

Suddenly, strong hands are on my shoulder.

"We gotta go." Hercules says, his voice cold.

"N-no. Please." I sob out, shielding Alex's body with mine.

"John. We gotta go. Now." He commands, pulling me up. He hands me the shotgun and walks away.

Thats our pact. We shot our loved ones, so they don't have to come back. So they don't have to suffer, don't have to murder the innocent.

My hands shake as I aim the barrel at my lovers head.

My finger wraps around the trigger.

"I'm sorry, Lex." I whisper, before lifting the barrel and firing a shot into the air.

"I'm not strong enough. I-I can't kill you. I'm sorry." I say.

I suddenly remember something, and reach into his bag, pulling out a worn leather book. The spine is bent, and the pages ripped, but its still the only thing worth taking.

I clutch the precious book close to my chest as I quickly walk away.

When I walk out of the alley, Hercules pats me on the shoulder.
"That's what he would've wanted."

Good, he doesn't know what really happened. I'm scared what he would've done if he found out.

Now a days, Hercules is different...changed. Ever since Laff died, hes been cold and emotionless. And I'm not sure if our years of friendship would protect me from the price of breaking our pact.

Its been a week now. Everything feels numb, and nothing's good anymore.

Even though we were stuck in this nightmare, Alex could still make me laugh.

But know, I feel hopeless, floating through the world with no purpose at all.

All I do is kill the infected, run from the infected, try not to become the infected. Day after day after day.

I can feel myself becoming emotionless and cold, just like Hercules.

I may not have been bit, but I'm still turning into a monster.
