My name is Jake Colin. I was and still am in love with my former best friend, Sam Rivers. We got really distant for years. But I really missed and still miss her. But we’re classmates now on our eight grade at school with my new best friend, Sebastian. I hope talking to her will be as simple as before.

About 3:55 in the afternoon, the school bell rang simultaneously loud. Students started coming out from their rooms and walk to the hall towards the same direction. Not a single student stopped for his/her locker to get some school stuff, just continued on walking. Some students were walking and chattering in groups; some were in pairs; and some others walked by themselves. About a few seconds after Sam and her friends cleared out the room, Sebastian and I went out from their Chemistry class. The two of us were walking a few inches behind from Sam and her friends. Neither of us could hear what they were talking about but it’s not like we cared. So I thought I’d talk to Sebastian instead of minding Sam.

“You’re such a wuss!” Sebastian yelled but he made sure I was the only one who could hear it.

“It’s not easy, you know.”

So my best friend thinks I’m sort of a loser for deciding to talk to Sam but couldn’t get myself to talk to her. He didn’t sound like he was personally teasing me but that hurt me and hurts me because I know it was true.

“I was kidding.” He followed up probably because he knew I got a little affected with it. “Sorry about that…”

“It’s okay…”

Sebastian stopped walking. “But I don’t understand something. Why couldn’t you talk to her when there’s nothing to be ashamed of? She doesn’t know anything of how you feel and she doesn’t seem to be avoiding you.”

I said nothing while walking past him. But I stopped a few feet away. I turned my head around but my eyes were glued to the floor. “I’m not shy… I’m not ashamed... I’m not feeling anything…… but fear… not because I’d be hurt… I’m afraid that she’ll have troubles because of me when I tell her.”

Sebastian shut himself and that felt a little weird.

“What?” I asked, turning around to face him.

Sebastian raised a brow and smiled. “You sound gay, man. Why get so freaking deep?”

I turned back and started walking again as the bell stopped ringing. “Let’s just go.”

“Hey! Hey! I’ve got an idea!” Sebastian jogged towards me and kept on yelling “Hey!” until I stopped again and asked what.

“How about you ask her out?” he suggested and stopped jogging as I did too.

I looked at him while he was smiling at me. I was pretty sure he was joking around but I didn’t take that as a joke. “Don’t be stupid… I haven’t even talked to her!!!”

Sebastian seemed astonished because I yelled at him. He looked pretty upset.
