About 15 minutes later, her mom has finished making dinner. We all sat down in the presence of this round table with tons of food. I didn’t really care about food that night. All I cared about was Sam. Was she angry or upset? I was just finishing the shrimp her mother served me when her father came in the kitchen door, dressed formally: black slacks, coat and tie. He didn’t see me because he was looking at Mrs. Rivers.

“Good evening Mr. Rivers.” I greeted.

“Why, hello,” he greeted, turning his facing to me. “We have a visitor. What’s the name, young man?”

“Dad, you’ve met him before,” Sam said. “He’s Jake.”

“Jake?” he took a look at me and recognized. “Oh yeah… It is him.”

     “It’s been a while, sir.” I said.

“Yeah,” he found his way to his seat. “You’ve grown. I was about to panic because I thought you were one of those stalkers. But it’s really great to see you.”

“Thank you, sir.” I ate a piece of the shrimp I pierced with my fork.

“Dad, I told you not to talk about them.” Sam said sadly. “Past is past.”

“I agree with Sam, honey,” Mrs. Rivers sat down to her seat, reaching some more shrimp to each of our plates. “We shouldn’t let our past ruin our future.”

“I wasn’t reminding,” he said. “I was giving Jake a warning.”

I hummed confusedly. “A warning, sir?”

     “Well, don’t get mad but-”

“Dad,” she interrupted him. “He’s not one of them, okay?”

“I was just saying,” he said. “But if Jake was one of those stalkers that come here, annoying us, I would be the one to kick his ass this time.”

“Dad,” she said. “Jake doesn’t and won’t do that, okay?”

I felt threatened by her father’s warning. But something Sam made it all go away. Which made me think that Sam might not be mad that I was still a coward.

“Ok, Sam,” he calmed her. “I was just making sure that if there’s one of those guys again, I’ll get to help you out in kicking his butt.”

“I didn’t kick their butt and you don’t have to,” she said. “And if ever there’s one of those guys again, I’ll take care of it. I can talk them out of it.”

Her dad kept his mouth shut after that. He chopped the food his wife served her. He stroke and ate it all in one. He chewed like there are a dozen of gums in his mouth. He noticed I was observing him?

“What is it, boy?” he munched.  “Why are you looking at me like that?”

All of our attention was caught. “It’s nothing, sir. I was just glaring. Sorry.” I said, smiling.

“OK,” he continued eating. “I thought you have a crush on me.”

We all laughed suddenly. His dad seemed the same. The same Mr. Rivers I’ve known. He’s still that hilarious type. He was sweet way back. I saw him kiss Mrs. Rivers when Sam and I were playing with our toys. I wondered if he’s still the same. But I guess he’s probably the same.

“So, Jake,” Mrs. Rivers said. “How’s school?”

     “What do you mean school?”
