Another month pregnant and everyone at the station grew cautious of me. Apparently, they don't want to make me upset in any way unless they want me to trigger my "motherly instincts" by yelling at them like a mother. Nonetheless, they avoided me and the only one who didn't fear coming towards me was Nanaba.
I groaned a bit as I rubbed my baby bump, sighing heavily as my eyes raced on the computer's screens. "Hungry?" I turned to see Nanaba holding a plate with a chocolate donut and a chocolate long john. "Come on- I haven't seen you eat since 6 am."
Sighing, I take the plate. "What would I ever do without my friend aiding me?" I chuckled, biting into the chocolate donut. The sugar made me hyper and made me smile. "These cravings are unbearable at this point."
Nanaba chuckles, taking a roller-chair and sitting down. "It's normal, Hanji. But I gotta make sure that both you and the baby are properly fed- want to get some lunch after those donuts? I'll pay."
"You sure?" She nods. "Thanks, Nanaba. Honestly... I can't survive on my own as a mother to a baby... thanks."
"Come on, you're my friend -a pregnant friend- and I want to help ya. Think of me as... your temporary boyfriend- since you know what I mean by being a temporary one." When she said that, Levi popped into my head and I nearly cried. "I know you're gonna get him back-"
"Hanji." We both turned to see Erwin about 3 feet away. His eyes narrowed down at me, and I felt the animosity between us. "I need to talk to you." He motioned his hand for me to follow him and walked away.
I turned to Nanaba for a bit of support, and she nodded. With that, I felt confidence as I walked behind Erwin with my hand on the bump. He leads me to his office, closing the door behind me. Facing him, I watched him close his blinds and it made me fearful. Protectively, I held my baby bump, rubbing it all over.
"What did you want?" I asked, sitting on the desk. He turns around, his back to the door. Trapped... I was trapped by him.
Erwin sighed, looking at me with his dull, blue eyes. I felt the energy in the room changed and I grew afraid. But I kept breathing heavily and slowly. I had to remain calm... for the baby's sake. "Your baby... Levi's the father, am I right?"
My hands stopped rubbing on the baby and I froze. My throat tightened up and goosebumps rose from my skin. "W-What makes you say that?"
"Just tell me the truth. Is he the father?"
"And if I tell the truth... what would you do about it?" I tried to remain calm... but it was so hard to do so. He knew who the father was... and I never told anyone but Nanaba. She would never... she would never tell expose me. "I want to know what you would do if I admitted it or not."
Erwin sighed, looking down. "So... no wonder he wanted to hurt you..." I heard him mumble and that struck fear deep into my mind. 'He...' does he mean the attacker who both cut me and framed Levi? He cleared his throat and sighed more. "His baby? And you lied to me?" A growl came through his voice and I heard it clear as day.
Standing onto my feet, I groaned and feeling the weight fall onto me- I almost collapsed. "So what, Erwin? It's also my baby and I can do whatever I damn want to!" I rolled my eyes at him, "I know he's innocent... and I am gonna free him from that damn place- he doesn't belong there."
"And where the hell do you think you're going? If you leave, you're gonna get fired!" I froze in my tracks as he says that. It works on everyone... I need the job not only to support myself and the baby- but I need to collect evidence to help convict the real unsub.
I turned around with growing fires within my eyes. "Erwin, you know damn well that I-"
"I don't care. Almost 2 months, Hanji- 2 months! You went and lied to everyone about your baby! I wanted to take care of it- but hearing it's Levi's... I kinda don't want to." His fists tightened and looked up to me with fierce blue flames.
"Erwin, I just want the innocent man to be out of that jail-"
"Innocent? Hah! He's not innocent for any crime. He has stolen goods, fist fights, etc. He's nothing but trouble. Levi Ackerman deserves to be in jail-"
My bottled up anger about Levi being locked up finally got released as he started to talk about him. "Levi? He doesn't. He never murdered anyone! Whatever he did must've been in self-defense! He's a misguided soul-"
"Misguided?! Hanji, listen to me. You're being manipulated by a street rat like him. I thought I warned you about listening to those people! You know what they called him down on the streets- he's practically a king on those streets! And you decide to fall in love with him? Him... why him? Why a street rat?"
"I just... felt I belonged with him. I saw how life down there was saddening and how Levi opened up to me about things down there... and I loved him. With all your advancements onto me... I noticed... but it didn't feel right being with you."
"Not right? Hanji, you knew I loved you. You knew I cared- and you went and slept with him! Hanji... I can't have this-"
"This is biased, Erwin!" My fists slammed onto the desk with my eyes displaying rage. "I'm gonna prove Levi is innocent."
He sighed heavily and looked at me. "I'm sorry, Hanji. Until you have given birth to your baby and your baby is 7 months old... I have to let you go on maternal leave."
"Y-You can't do that! I'm still fit to keep working!"
"It's better than you fired, am I right? Of course... I can let keep working here on one condition: no more proving Levi is innocent. Understood?" Trapped again. He wants to be with me still... and he probably still have intentions on being with me in a relationship... but I cannot take that.
I simply sighed and gave him an answer. "I'll take the leave then, Erwin. See you in a year or so." I pushed him aside and felt a grin behind my back. I played his little game... and he took control of the whole thing. He had won... and there was nothing I could've done.
"Detective Zoe?" I turned to see Officer Geterson. He examined me a bit, "Is everything alright?"
I nodded, "Yes, Geterson. I'm fine. Where are you off to?"
"To Erwin Smith. I got to... er, report my findings to him." Findings? Erwin doesn't send lower officers to search stuff- he sends other higher ups.
"Ah, what did you find about this case?"
He shrugs, being calm in my presence. Other than Nanaba... he was the only calm guy in this station. No matter the situation... he always seemed to smile- which also seemed fake. "Can't say, Detective Zoe. Do you have anything that you need from me?"
"Have you started patrolling yet?"
"I will, once I'm done reporting to Erwin Smith."
"Where were you assigned?"
My arms crossed over and he calmly stared at me. "Down where the almighty Underground King once lived. And besides, I'm the only other one who can ensure the filthy people don't go anywhere but the dumps." Filthy? Levi said his attacker called him- "Anyways, I'll see you around, Detective Zoe." He smiles and nods before walking towards Erwin's office.
I sighed heavily when I thought of Levi again... the thought of me being on leave- I can still visit Levi- although it won't be on police matters... just myself.
