It was 3:21 am when Steve felt his arm being slightly shaken. This time it was Danny.
"Hey." Danny grinned.
"Hi." Steve grinned back.
"Kiss me."
Steve glanced behind him. Danny's mom and daughter were still sound asleep. Light snores coming from each cot. He turned back around at Danny.
"You want our first kiss to be in front of your mom?" Steve asked, ears growing pink.
"We've waited long enough." Danny shrugged, tried shrugging.
This is true, Steve thought, but still, he had his first kiss with Danny planned already. It would take place during their first date. It was going to be under stars at their spot on the cliff. They would have just finished the picnic Grace would have helped him make. Steve would pull out his guitar and start singing Danny love songs. They would cuddle, watching the sunset over the ocean. They would look at the stars. They would look at each other. A shooting star would pass above them, unnoticed. And then, they would kiss.
"A little longer won't kill us." Steve said.
Danny groaned, Steve had been resistant to let their first kiss be in the hospital. He hated to admit it but it was starting to worry him. Had Steve chickened out? Had the thought of kissing Danny on the mouth repulsed him so much that it brought him to his senses? Had he just been playing along with all this for Danny's sake? Because he was in the hospital, because he felt pity for him? Was kissing the one line he wouldn't—couldn't—cross? Something even pity couldn't bring him to do?
"Prude." Danny opted for saying, instead of voicing all his growing concerns.
Steve rolled his eyes. He intertwined his hand with Danny's good one and kissed all of Danny's fingers. Danny pulled their hand to his lips once Steve had finished. He kissed all of Steve's fingers in return. This was starting to become a normal thing for them.
"I just want our first kiss to be special."
"You're such a marshmallow." Danny couldn't help but grin. He told the worry-ier side of him to shut up.
Steve rested his head back on Danny's bed, titling it to face Danny—his thumb rubbing circles on Danny's hand. He couldn't help but bring the intertwined hands back up to his mouth and he kissed Danny's once more.
"You know," Steve said, looking at his and Danny's hand, "we're not like most," —he felt giddy saying it—"most couples." His eyes shot up for approval from Danny. He wanted to make sure Danny also saw themselves as a couple.
Danny smiled, his head cocking, "how are we not like most couples?"
"Well most. They meet. They go on their first date. They kiss. They say I love you. They move in together. They... get married." He paused before continuing, ears pink once again, "We've said our I love youse and moved in together, but we haven't had our first date or kiss yet."
"When did we move in together?"
"Well, I mean you're technically moved in."
"From Fridays to Mondays."
"Yeah but... I mean... you're technically moved in."
Danny rolled his eyes. He thought about his tiny apartment, how empty it had become. Most things he valued were in Steve's house. Steve included.
"When do they fuck?" asked Danny.
Steve's head shot up and he quickly glanced behind him at the Williams ladies.
Still asleep.
Face red, he turned back to Danny. "What?"
"These most couples you mentioned, when do they fuck? You didn't say that in your list of things."
Steve forgot how to swallow, how to breathe, how to blink, how to close his mouth.
Remember this might just be a pity act! He's playing along cause he feels bad for you. Why the hell would you mention fucking?! Look at the poor thing, shutting down, planning the nearest escape route.
"Steve. In and out. Relax Steve. Want me to call a nurse?"
"Um." Steve cleared his throat. "Uh."
"Relax Steve, we don't have to do anything your not comfortable with."
" I'm not comfortable with?"
"Yes. You don't even want to kiss me. I don't know why I even brought up sex. Forget about it. Go back to sleep."
"Hey!" Steve said straightening up, hand tightening its grip on Danny's. He brought his face closer to Danny's and dropped his voice to a deep growl, still all too aware that his boyfriend's mother was in the room with them. "I want to sex you, okay. Don't think I don't want to sex you."
Danny's pupils dilated. He felt a lust he'd been restraining growing stronger by the second. He wanted to reach out and steal his first kiss with Steve. He wanted to pull the man on top of him and kiss him till they both need respirators to breathe. They were already in a hospital, might as well take advantage of it, right?
But he didn't. He was amazed at his self-control and was sure it was worthy of several awards and gold medals.
Soon, the deep breathing of both men started to normalize. Steve reluctantly sat back down on his chair.
"You and I," Steve said, another glance back at the Williams ladies, "we'll have and do all the bells and whistles of a real couple, once your out of this hospital."
Danny groaned, both in pleasure and annoyance. "Stupid, damn hospital, keeping me for over four days."
"Fantastic, great hospital, keeping you alive."
Danny rolled their eyes, yeah I guess there's that too .
