Pineapples - Thanksgiving weekend, dropping Mary off at airport
"I'm going to miss Aunt Mare," Gracie said with a frown as they watched her pass through TSA.
"Me too monkey," Steve said, running his hand over her hair.
Danny looked at them and his heart swelled.
"Alright you two," Danny said after a beat, knowing he would do just about anything in the world to make them happy, "Wanna go get shave ice?"
Gracie and Steve grinned at each other, nodding with excitement.
"Alright but nothing pineapple shrimp flavored!" Danny warned as they turned to leave.
As they drove out of the airport, Steve's phone buzzed.
Danny, per usual, went to answer it.
What am I? Your valet service? Your assistant? I think not! It's your phone, you answer it! - Danny had said the first time Steve had asked him to answer his phone for him.
Now, doing it was just a habit.
"Mary's at her gate. Plane boarding in fifteen." Danny announced as he read out Mary's text, then he typed out a response on behalf of the three of them.
They were all in their PJs, freshly showered as they sat in the living room, queuing up a string of teen rom-coms that Gracie had picked.
Danny was wearing a pair of old flannel pants that had been Steve's early in high school. They were the perfect length.
He sat criss cross on the couch, snuggled between Steve and Gracie, and he was trying not to lend too much time and energy to comparing his relationship with Steve to all the ones they were watching.
When the bell rang and Steve got up to get the pizza, Danny and Gracie compared the pros and cons of the love interests from the movie.
When Steve came back in, he was donning a mischievous smile.
Danny stopped mid-sentence, he stared Steve down.
"No." He said firmly.
Steve grinned in response and opened the pizza box, revealing a pineapple topped pizza.
"I thought we ordered a quarter of it with just pepperoni." Danny said, crossing his arms.
"Danny, stop lying to yourself! You love pineapple pizza! You're just denying it to keep up with appearances and what you've been telling everyone for years!"
Danny gaped at him.
Steve raised his eyebrows. "Tell me I'm wrong."
"I'll-I'll-you," Danny shook his head, he tried again. "I'll-" He grumbled out the rest of his words, incomprehensibly.
"What?" Steve asked, cocky grin on his face, he leaned forward cupping his ear. "Was that you admitting defeat?"
Danny grumbled more in response.
Steve set the pizza box on the coffee table and picked up a slice, it sagged a little in his hand as he held it up, offering it to Danny, inviting him to take a bite.
Danny stared at the slice of pizza, then looked over at Gracie who was biting back her laughter, then up at Steve, who was staring at him with those unrelenting eyes of his.
Then he looked back at the pizza and watched as a pineapple threatened to slide off.
Danny glanced back up at Steve, then, in one swift sudden motion, that surprised even himself, he reached for Steve's hand and... pushed it up, slamming the pizza slice into Steve's face.
Gracie gasped as sauce and pineapples fell to the floor.
Did I really just resort to teenage antics with my crush? Danny thought, frozen with horror, lips pressed together, hands clenched, as he watched the slice of pizza slide ever so slowly off of Steve.
When it finally fell to the floor with a plop, it revealed Steve's shocked face.
Steve blinked, sauce clinging to his eyelashes; pineapples, cheese, and sauce adorning the rest of his face.
Danny opened his mouth to apologize for whatever the hell had just come over him, but as he opened his mouth, all that came out was a " Pffttttt ."
Then Danny broke into a fit of laughter.
"Oh," Steve said, licking some sauce off of his lips as he spoke. "So, you think this is funny?" He placed his hands on his hips and tried to look intimidating.
" Yeah ," Danny was able to get out, he tried to hold back his laughter. "You should take a look at yourself babe."
Steve nodded, he turned to Gracie, who was nearly turning red from trying to hold back her laughter. "Do you think this is funny?" He asked her.
Gracie choked out a, " N-o " Giggles escaping before she could even finish the word.
Steve nodded again, trying his best to look stoic and pensive.
A pineapple plopped off his forehead and fell to the floor.
Laughter escaped out of Danny again.
Then, in a quick swift motion, Steve leaned down, grabbed another slice, and, before Danny could even register the motion, Steve was plopping it face down on Danny's head.
Gracie shrieked out, face equal parts shocked and elated as she watched pineapples, sauce and cheese cling down on Danny's pampered hair.
Danny went slack jawed. Through the sauce that was now dripping onto his face he watched as Steve grinned at him.
He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out.
Steve chuckled and stuck his tongue out at Danny, then, with expert control, tilted his head slightly and helped work a slice of pineapple that was stuck on his cheek into his mouth.
Danny closed his mouth and swallowed.
Then, Steve grabbed another slice of pizza, and slowly and gently offered it to Gracie, winking as she cautiously took it.
She looked up at him with mischievous eyes.
Steve replied with a wide grin and yelled out, "FOOD FIGHT!!!"
Gracie giggled, glancing at her dad, as if asking for permission.
Danny tried holding back his grin as he sighed. He shrugged at her, as if, once a food fight has been declared, there was no way of stopping it.
Gracie grinned again, then carefully tore the slice in two, toppings falling onto her lap as she did, but remaining determined nonetheless.
Then, she looked up at the men again, grinning.
"Food fight!!!" She echoed, acting before she could change her mind.
She smushed one half onto Danny's head, and tossed the other half at Steve, hitting him on the chest.
Danny nodded, sauce dripping over him as he did.
Biting back his grin, he stood up off the couch, slice and a half falling off of him.
"First rule of food fights Gracie," He said grabbing a new slice, "Always take cover after hitting your target!"
He gently plopped the pizza slice on her face.
She screamed and giggled and ran to take cover behind the couch.
"I'll bring more ammunition!" Steve announced, heading towards the kitchen.
"Are we doing teams?" Gracie asked from her hiding spot.
"Of course monkey!" Steve shouted back as he rummaged through the pantry.
"No fair, you two always team up against me in splash wars!" Danny protested, secretly taking a bite from an untouched pizza slice. "You can't do the same for this."
"That's cause you're so-" Steve said, walking in with an armful of food, he stopped, catching Danny mid bite. "I knew it!"
