THE JOURNEY

     Saturday morning, Jasmine gets to school before Austin; with hopes that no one is watching her. "Where could he be?" Jasmine thinks to herself as she brings out her phone to dial his number. He picks "Where the hell are you?", she asked almost shouting.

      "Calm down woman, I'm on my way". Two minutes later Austin stood beside Jasmine who was trying to open the gate. "What are you doing?", he whispered.

     Jasmine jumps in surprise when she heard his voice, "You scared me", she said placing her hand to her chest trying to ease her the rate her heart was beating. "Am trying the lock. I forgot to duplicate the key", she gestures to the padlock.

     "Step aside and watch the master at work". He stepped forward and brought out two pins from his jeans pocket. The padlock snapped open and he pushed the gate open. Jasmine didn't even bother to ask any question, she leads the way to the basement.

     When they reached the trap door "You ready?", she looked at Austin, he nodded to her answer. Jasmine bent and opened the door and descended the stairs, she and Austin brought out their flashlights and turned it on.

     They got to the shelf and Austin watched in awe as Jasmine dragged the book and the shelf opened up. "That was so awesome", he said raising his hand almost rejoicing.

     "Oh shut up Austin", she whispered moving into the room and in front of the machine. "Here it is", she murmured scanning the machine again. She steps forward and pressed the button on the machine and it shone to life. She turned to see Austin still looking, she grabs his hand, "Come on", and pulls him with her into the machine.

     They land on the grass as the portal disappears. Austin jumps up to examine his environment. "Wow you were not kidding", he muttered to himself. Jasmine starts walking with Austin following behind her. They walked around the forest for what seems like forever. "Jas, do you know where we are heading?". Austin asked stopping to look around.

     Jasmine stopped to look around as well. "It's somewhere here I know it", she whispered telling Austin and herself but she continues forward.

     Jasmine stopped when she stepped on a wire and a log came swinging Austin's way, he ducks and dodges the log with the log now swinging to Jasmine's direction. She stood frozen looking at the log coming her way.

     "Jasmine get down!", he shouted trying to snap her out of her trance. When she didn't move, Austin jumps on her pushing them to the ground with him on her, just as the log swung past.

     Austin looks at her as she closes her eyes and tries to catch her breath. She places her hands on his chest as she opens her eyes to meet his gaze. "Thanks", she said still looking at him.

     He licks his lips "No problem". They keep looking at each other until Austin clears his throat and gets up. "We should keep moving", he said offering his hand which she accepts.

     "Yeah", she muttered as she was pulled up.

     "So you think you can still remember the way?", he sighed looking at her.

     "I think I remember", she walked forward.

     After a long walk, they approached the cave. They hid behind a tree. "So where is the bag?", Austin asked peeping from behind the tree.

     "Behind the rock inside the cave, come on." She moved into the cave and went to the rock picking her bag. "Come on, let's get out of here before something weird happens."

     "I SMELL HUMANS", the giant interrupted with a deep voice. "It has been a while since I tasted humans", the giants announced licking its lips.

     "We need to get out of here", Austin reminded her leading the way out of the cave. Following Austin close behind, Jasmine steps on something making it snap with an echo getting the attention of the giant.

     "There are humans here", the giant said getting up and walked towards the entrance of the cave. "Come out humans, I won't kill you". Jasmine and Austin got behind the rock again hiding from the giant.

      Austin turns to see Jasmine nearly in tears, he raises his index finger pressing it on his lips motioning her to be quiet. Austin leans closer to the rock, inhaling and exhaling slowly in an attempt to calm himself.

      The cave became quiet, too quiet. Austin looks over to Jasmine and gestured to her to remain where she was. He closes his eyes, inhaling and exhaling silently before opening his eyes and peep from behind the rock.

      Austin turns back immediately, face widened in horror, he grabs Jasmine's hand pulling her with him towards the exit. "We need to get out of here and fast". They had barely moved from the rock before the giant comes charging forward smashing the rock into a million pieces.

      They run directly into the forest as they dodge trees and branches that came flying to their faces. The noise of the giant's footsteps increases as it gets closer. They run taking a sharp turn left hiding behind a tree as the giant passes. The giant comes to a sudden stop, it raises it's head and sniffs the air trying to catch their scent, it snaps it's head to the direction the went and runs towards them.

      Noticing the giant's movement Austin taps Jasmine's hand "Come on let's go fast', he said getting up from the position he was in. Jasmine follows suit and soon trips on another tree root making her land face flat on the floor. Austin stops in his tracks and goes back to help her up.

      "I can't go any further", Jasmine says as tears roll down her cheek. Austin combs his hair with his hand as he looks around for the giant who seems to want to plan an ambush. He brings his attention back to Jasmine, she looks terrified. He places his hands on her cheek bringing her eyes to meet his gaze. "Come on Jasmine, you can do this, we have to get home, we have to escape this place", he says breathlessly.

      "I can't I'm too slow, I am not fast enough", she says still crying.

      Austin cleans her tears with his thumbs, "Do it for someone you love the most, the one person that will still want you alive", he stated "If your mom was still alive she will want you to come back to her and now she's gone she still wants you alive, do it for her, do it for your mom", he says convincing her. Jasmine nods accepting what he has said. "Come on let's go before it catches up with us".

     They keep running until they reach a  particular distance, "I think we lost it". Austin managed to say while struggling for air.

     "Good I don't think I can run any further". Jasmine drops down to the ground and rests her back on the tree behind her and closes her eyes.

     "We can't stay here for long", he sys moving backward. "We have to keep mov..." Austin didn't finish his sentence as he fell quiet.
