ch. 4 ; miss me with that bullshit

Jade

i heard a knock on my door, as i was unpacking everything from my suitcase. it was kristen. i turned around.

"dinner is ready," she smiled walking over to me.

"i'm not that hungry," i muttered aggressively taking clothes out of my bags into drawers.

"c'mon, don't be cold with me. i'm not matthew. i'm kristen, basically your big sister!" she started to help me arrange my clothes.

i stayed quiet, one more word of matt, and i will literally cut off my ears. without all the starry night shit and stuff.

"if it makes you feel better, i still comment heart eyes under your selfies, i never stopped," she joked.

it was enough to make me giggle a little.

"there's our little jade!" she smiled taking me into a hug.

"i'm sorry. it's just you know..."  i trailed off.

"matthew. i get it. he really did you wrong. but maybe it's time to fix that, you know? you guys are older and more mature. you guys were best friends after all," she continued for me

"key word, were. i'm not ever making up with him," matt got hot, don't get me wrong. but nothing could ever fix what he did. him leaving really hurt me. cutting off all contact was just- it was too much.

"well, that's fine, but mom made your favourite," she changed the topic.

"fettuccine alfredo!" i screeched.

"yes, yes!" she smiled standing up leaving her hand out for me.

i took her hand and she helped me off the floor. we exited my room and we began to walk downstairs for dinner. the table was filled. i was sitting next to my mom and theo. matthew was across from me.

"so jade, do anything fun for your birthday?" ryan made small talk.

"nothing, you guys would find fun," theo answered for me.

"what did she choose to do?" dylan asked curious of my boring birthday plans.

"she made us and shawn do a knitting class," theo chuckled.

"i bet shawn enjoyed that, how is he?" kristen grinned.

i saw matt getting uncomfortable at the mention of shawn. not surprised. our parents were currently having small talks with their parents. they were also slowly getting drunk off wine, so they didn't bother to join our conversation.

"he's amazing. he has really started to get out of his shell," i responded.

"that's great, does he still sing?" kristen asked.

"oh my god, yes. his voice is breathtaking, i love it," i emphasized 'love'.

"may i be excused?" matt suddenly asked.

"uh, sure honey, just put your dishes in the sink, it's dylan's turn tonight," mrs. espinosa awkwardly smiled.

he was obviously in a rush to leave. dylan groaned as soon as he realized he's on dish duty.

-

dinner eventually finished, and i helped dylan finish up dishes while kristen, theo, and ryan went out. our parents were catching up in the living room over wine and music. my mom and dad looked so happy to be reunited with their best friends.

"and that's the last one," i said drying off the last dish.

"thanks for helping me jade, nobody ever helps me," dylan thanked me as he dried his hands off.

"of course, teamwork makes the dream work," i quote.

"and my dream is the shower and then bed, night jade," he waved before heading upstairs.

"night dylan,"

i waited until he was upstairs before i sneaked myself a glass of wine. a small glass of love. i rushed upstairs with my glass to my room, quickly locking the door behind me. as soon as i turned to face my bed, there was matt. laying down on it. he was on his phone staring at the ceiling. he quickly sat up once he heard me.

"no. no. no," i began.

"jade, can we please just talk," he begged.

"that's not what you were saying three years ago," i took a sip of my wine, taking a seat in the corner where the black desk is.

"i'm sorry, i didn't mean for us to not talk for that long," he apologized.

"you're only apologizing because you're being forced to spend a month with me," i began to gulp down the remains of my wine.

"a month?" he asked, genuinely confused.

"yeah, a month. winter break is a month." i said.

"i thought you were only staying for the weekend," he looked at my luggage.

"no wonder, you have so much stuff," he exclaimed grinning at the little mystery he solved.

"now, we definitely have to make up. a month is too long for us to be fighting," he went back to his phone.

"so, i was right, you're only apologizing so our parents think we're cool," i spoke.

"well duh, my dad would be pissed if he. knew how much you hated me, and why you hated me," he said as if it's the most obvious thing ever.

i tilted my head in confusion.

"our parents think that we've kept in touch these past three years," he explained.

"but we haven't, what the fuck-" i was cut off.

"exactly. so we need to keep this up," he interuppted me.

"no, you need to keep this up, i'm fine," i pointed at him.

"well, if your parents knew that you weren't talking to their best friend's favourite son, i don't think they would let shawn around anymore," he threatened me.

"what?" i gulped nervously.

"the only reason they keep shawn around is because they think you're sad that i'm gone. you know, they think we're end game or some shit. so, if we weren't even talking, why would you need a replacement of me," he explained.

i stood up walking to my door. in a matter of seconds, matt appeared really close to me, trapping me between him and the door.

"see you tomorrow, bestie," his faces only an inch from mine.

i stepped out of the way, so he could get out. i instantly locked my door as soon as he left. i need to tell anastastia. its twelve am here though, meaning its three am there. i can't wake her up right now. i'll wait until morning.

i can't lose shawn too.
