Chapter 1
Kenneth hastily flipped through the papers on the king's desk. He frantically searched for the ones he needed. In a few minutes, the king would be coming back from his lunch, and no one wanted to be caught spying against the king. Kenneth knew that from personal experience.
He remembered the day that his older sister, Ash, got caught spying. The king was so furious, he exploded in flames, lighting his own throne on fire (it didn't burn because it was fireproof). Kenneth remembered how his sister's desperate screams echoed through the castle as she burned to death.
He remembered watching her breathe her last breath right before his eyes. Her face was streaked with dirt, tears, blood, and blistering scorch marks. Tears welled up in Kenneth's eyes at the thought of his sister.
He remembered the way her beautiful, wavy strawberry-blonde hair would blow against the wind, how her honey-colored eyes filled with concern when he told her that he was going to join the . He had begged her, saying how the king was evil and had to be overthrown. She didn't falter, but instead died for her cause.
Kenneth smiled, sadly, to himself at the memory. Ash never gave up. She was annoyingly but endearingly stubborn that way. He finally convinced her that he could join, but under the condition that she could help him with every mission he had. It was all Kenneth's fault for letting her help him on his mission.
The memory was bright in his mind. Ash was caught with official papers that were confidential. She was reported to the king and taken to him. There, Kenneth was brought to watch the entire execution, along with the other servants. Ash was an example of what would happen if anyone else went behind his back.
After that, the enraged king had given him thirty lashes, just because he was her brother. Kenneth recalled the searing pain of the burning, hot iron rod scorching into his back. Kenneth's back was slashed with scars that had oozed out fresh, bright red blood. He shuddered at the thought.
He wondered what might happen if the king found out what he was doing. Immediate death would probably be the more appealing option.
Stop daydreaming! Remember your task! Right. Kenneth needed to find the papers.
Just then, Kenneth froze as he heard footsteps. They were getting louder and louder. Kenneth listened desperately hoping they would disappear. But, every step thundered closer and closer to the room.
The king was back from his lunch!
Oh no. Kenneth quickly scanned the room for a place to hide, but there was no place he could go.
Kenneth's heart beat louder and louder. He wasn't sure what he should do.
As if to answer him, the doorknob turned and the door swung open.
