I swiped my metro card and turned the turnstile. This wasn't one of my bright ideas, after mumbling a lame excuse I dashed out of Colby's house and walked until I just couldn't. I didn't even care which direction I was going in, I walked up the stairs to the outdoor platform. Surprisingly, the sun was still out, barely, and there were random gusts of cool wind. I pulled my flimsy sweater around my self a little tighter.
"Express four train to Crown Heights-Utica Avenue is approaching the station, please stay away from the platform edge." Said the monotone female voice.
I braced myself and stepped closer to the platform's edge. The train zoomed past me and after sending my eyes in circles as I tried to focus on the speeding bullet, it came to a screeching stop an the doors opened with a bing.
It was fairly empty, save for the mother and her two kids racing up and down the the length of the compartment, tagging each other and swinging from the poles.
I walked over to the seat in the corner and plugged my headphones in and slumped into the pale blue subway seat. I watched as the rooftops passed in a colorful blur. Soon enough, the setting sun morphed into the grimy darkness that is the underground subway.
"Is this seat taken?" I shook my head no and pulled my bag into my lap. I closed my eyes, the warmth of the person next to me radiated, causing goosebumps to rise on my skin.
"Janine?" I looked next to me to see Dean with his arm wrapped around a leggy blonde, she was model pretty and I couldn't help the twinge of jealousy that pierced my heart.
"Uh, yeah, the next stop is my stop actually" I gathered my things, ripping my headphones out of my ears and shoving them into my bag. I got up in a frenzy and the realization that I had absolutely no clue where I was began to sink in. I shifted the weight nervously between the balls of my feet, my eyes darting around to an indicator as to where I could be.
I stood in front of the doors closest to where I was sitting, I watched as the train pulled into the station. The doors opened...on the other side. I felt a blush creeping up my neck and into my cheeks, I nearly tripped over my own two feet while walking over to the other doors, rushing out before a hand on my back, literally caused me to yell out.
Smooth, Janine, real smooth.
"You look lost" Dean looked down at me with the same boyish charm that won me over the first time, the way he would offer you a small smile, his dimples poking through his tanned skin. The way he made you feel so comfortable, whether it was with his arms around you or his finger laced through yours. Everything about us was so perfect to me, the times I caught him staring at me with a stupid grin on his face were proof of that. When we were together, my friends would tell me that it was as if it was a match made in heaven. Seems like a bunch or garbage now.
"I might've gotten on a random train and then you got on and I just had to get off, I just wanted to think" I brushed my hair back multiple times, not daring to look up at Dean.
"You overthink things, remember all those times you would call me in the middle of the night to meet you in the park, I would bring blankets and pillows and we would lay in the bed of my truck and just watch the stars" He laughed nervously and scratched the back of his neck "I'm sorry, I probably shouldn't have brought that up"
"You remember that?" I finally looked up at him in pure shock, I have to admit my heart was soaring.
"I was with you, wasn't I?" He smiled and looked past me, in a daze, as if he was reminiscing.
