The Mug

I wake up and I know exactly where I am, I know this room like the back of my hand. The light comes in at a weird angle from this one broken blind that we never fixed. I love that nothing has changed. It's like the one constant here, knowing that as son as I walk out into the world everything is different.

I slowly get up and make my bed before putting my house shoes on and heading to the main house. I look at my phone and it's 9 in the morning so Gloria should be up. I walk into the kitchen with the mug Michael had got me. I dug it out last night so I could use it.  Gloria is gonna have a heart attack when she sees the mug. I chuckle as I make my English breakfast tea. Thankfully she has a kurig so I don't have to boil water.

"Morning Aly," I hear Gloria say as soon as she walks into the kitchen.

"Morning Tia, how'd you sleep?" I pull my mug out and start her coffee. I walk over to the fridge and grab the creamer out.

"Better knowing you were in the back.  It's been a bit lonely with Felix not being here." I see the look on her face as I sip my tea.

"I'm glad I could help you sleep. I won't be leaving the house until I have to go back."

"I'm glad to hear that, you know your mom and dad won't be happy about that," she gives me this knowing smile. Her dark green eyes have a glint of humor behind them. Her silvery grey hair is in a messy bun on top of her head. She's not much taller than I am and she won't let me forget that she is technically taller. She is the definition of a cool aunt, but she is also more like my mom.

"Well they can suck it. I am 18 and I can live wherever I choose." I smile at her an I can see a spark in her smile. "So when would be a good time to go and visit Felix?"

"Well at eleven he has chemo so probably around four. He'll have time for a nap. "

"Sounds good, I'm gonna get my stuff unpacked today and take a ride in RQ. I haven't driven in a while," I chuckle as I

"Sounds good, I'll let you know when I head over and we can drive together," she smiles at me and it's the warmest smile. I missed her so much.

Her and I talk about the flight over and how I have such a difficult time sleeping on moving things, especially planes. It's nice just being able to catch up with her and not have it be over the phone. I missed seeing her smile, and as hard as seeing Felix is gonna be, I can't wait to see him too.

"What is on your mug?!" she yells and points at the mug, wow I'm shocked it took her this long to notice. I start laughing when she does the sign of the cross, she's such a good catholic.

"It was a gift from one of my friends from Australia. You know that Supernatural show that I like? It's from that." I am trying to keep my self from doubling over in laughter at her doing the full thing.

"Mi hija,  what have I told you about that sort of stuff into this house?" I get this dirty look from her and now I can't hold back the laughter.

"I'm sorry Tia, I'll take it back to my place," I laugh as eave the house.

"No traigas esa mierda del demonio a esta casa!" I hear her yell, there is humor behind her words that makes me laugh harder. The rough translation is "don't bring that crap into this house."

I walk into my apartment, essentially and I head to my room so I can put stuff into my drawers. I keep sipping my tea while I pull stuff out of my bags and put some in the drawers and hang some of it up. I know that I'll have to go to the annual Christmas party where almost all of my mom's entire side of the family shows up.  My dad's side doesn't really come, I'm hoping this year at least Gloria will come. It's a black tie affair and Gloria and Felix are not black tie people, neither is most of my dad's family. I don't particularly like black tie but I don't hate it.
