Aviva applied a sunblock with one hundred sun protection factor all over her beige gelatinous skin before donning herself a black jumpsuit. Her pants draped over her heels and swept through the floor. Cursing, she floated an inch higher from the black marble tiles. She looked down. Not enough. She rose upward a quarter-inch more. After making sure that the hems of her pants wouldn't get soiled, she levitated through the air to her dressing table.

Though for the past twenty years, the mirror would only reflect a black mirage, Aviva still pretended to check if there were any pimples growing on her cheeks. Her butler affirmed her that from the human's eyes, she looked like an ordinary lady, a beautiful one. They had even hired the most famous artist in Tahoa Town to sketch a portrait of herself. From the end result, her features were prominent, with a sharp nose and lips in a natural peachy tone. Her eyes looked as if they were carved out of black crystals, shading under thick lashes that curled up to the sky. She felt her beauty too. That was the reason why she was so particular about pimples.

She had a reputation to maintain. Minutes later, when she could find none, she began combing her hair. At least her hair felt solid. After wrapping her long black curls up with a pink bandanna, she pulled the hood over her head and walked out of her bedroom.

Oddish's Stun Spore should be riped by now. She grinned as she wafted through the dark corridor.

Her butler's off-tune singing came from the living room. Aviva cursed again. One day, she would enroll him in a Vocal Class. As much as she wanted to strangle him now, she didn't head to the living room. Instead, she slid down the ebony spiral staircase and drifted through a pathway that linked her kitchen to her conservatory. A three-minute journey under the heavily postered aisle and she arrived at the 1,000 square feet gazebo built with glass panels.

It was a reservoir which housed fifty types of exotic plants. One of the species which Aviva was extremely proud of was the Ghost Orchid. It was declared extinct ten years ago. No one had ever known that the pale plants with no leaves thrived in her greenhouse.

The glass panels allowed her plants and Pokemon to absorb sunray for the photosynthesis process in daylight and enabled them to bask in the moonlight at night. As Oddish usually slept through the afternoon and had only waked up after sunset, Aviva had to make sure they could gather enough moonlight to reach maximum health. She couldn't wait to see how they were doing. As she pushed down the handle and entered the building, the sunray singed her cheek.

She cursed as a fragment of her skin peeled off. The jelly-like substance dropped on the ground and melted. Damn it! I got duped again! No wonder the cream felt watery when she salved it on her skin. She made a mental note of not buying anything from a flea market anymore before dashing to a table next to the door. Quickly, she grabbed a remote control and pressed the off button. In next to no time, black curtains enveloped the gazebo.

The curtains were thin so Aviva's vision wouldn't be affected and at the same time, her body wouldn't be hurt by the sunlight. The weak lighting ambiance actually created a haven for the nocturnal Oddish too. Without further ado, she called out for her Pokemon.

Silence lingered in the air.

"Ah, so you want to play the pick-a-boo game?"

Aviva jolted to the empty flower pots. No Oddish. Amongst the climbing vines. No Oddish. Inside her tools cupboard. No Oddish. Hmm, must be still playing outside. She drifted through a row of orange peony before reaching the back door. Without waiting, she gave the door handle a push.

Her eyes immediately took in the picturesque view of a valley. The 1,500 hectares of land, guarded by tall electric fences, was where she built her ranch. She'd divided the land into different sections with her butler's help. There were chicken coops, horse stables, and even a large aquarium located near a waterfall at the farthest right part of the land. Above her, sparrows flew across the azure sky. Ducks frolicked in the nearby creek. Frogs sang on the stones.

Aviva couldn't help but gave herself a pat on the back.

She'd succeeded in creating a reservoir for both Pokemon and non-Pokemon. With her strategic segregation according to species, all of them lived harmoniously together. Grinning to herself, Aviva inhaled the fresh dewy air before putting two fingers on her lips, whistling.

A creature with a round blue body sprang towards her on two little root-like feet. Five long, green leaves jutted out of its scalp, swaying in the breeze. All of Aviva's trepidation resolved as she saw her friend which was only fifty centimeters in height.

Squatting under the shades of the roof, she stroked Oddish's forehead.

More Oddish, attracted by her chuckles, jumped out of the shrubs and hopped towards her. Aviva stood up and counted. At the twelfth count, she turned around and walked into the gazebo. The clan of Oddish tailed behind her, concurrently singing in a melodious voice. Once they had formed a straight line before her, their magenta eyes shone with excitement as they waited for Aviva to nurse them. Aviva began to place her gadgets on the ground.

"Alright, let's start with you! Still having a fever?" Aviva unlocked the First Aid Kit. She grabbed a thermometer and brought it in front of Oddish Number One. She differentiated each of them by marking numeric figures on the tips of their leaves. "Now, open your mouth. Aaaaa....."

Oddish Number One did as it was told.

Aviva dipped the thermometer into its mouth. Seconds later, she brought it out and checked the temperature. "35 degrees Celsius. Perfect." Oddish Number One hopped on her lap as if knowing what it had to do next. Its mouth remained open. Aviva retrieved a miniature torchlight from her pocket and flashed it inside the Pokemon's mouth. "Alright, your teeth are fully grown now. No more fever!" Aviva handed it a honey-coated biscuit before shouting, "Next!"

"Oddish. Oddish?" Oddish Number Two, skinnier than the rest, hopped on a weighing scale.

"Ah, so you want to have your weight checked again?" Aviva frowned at the figure shown. "Five kilograms? You are four hundred grams lighter than the ideal weight. Seriously, you shouldn't keep skipping meals. Here." Aviva handed it two cookies. "Make sure you finish them now. Next!"

Oddish Number Two chanted its complaint through a mouthful of cookies before skipping away.

One by one, Aviva checked their blood pressure, cut their nails, trimmed their hair. When she was examining the last Oddish, she saw two Caterpie chewing on a leaf on its head. Quickly, she removed them and tossed them into a jar. The feet of the greenish caterpillars wriggled in fright. The yellow ring-shaped markings down the sides of their bodies enlarged, trying to scare off their predators. Seeing that their first tactic didn't work, they ejected a foul smell from the red feelers on top of their heads. Aviva remained unbudged. Thinking that the woman before them might be a soft touch, they tried to win over her sympathy with their big watery eyes.

"Nah-uh, they won't work on me, 'cause I'm Aviva the Bug Eater."

Aviva let out a burst of shrill laughter as she capped the lid. She never favoured Bug-type. She would deal with those pesticides later. Now she had an important agenda to attend to. After placing the jar on the table next to the main entrance, she squatted underneath the table to reach for a minibar. Slipping her fingers into her pocket, she fished out a bunch of keys and unlocked the minibar with the biggest one. From the inside of it, she took out twelve test tubes.

The pinkish contents glistened under the mild sunray. She needed to collect Oddish's Stun Spore thrice to create these concoctions. They were to be poured into syringes which would be then inserted into her gun's bullet slots. As she fired, the syringes would pierce the targeted Pokemon and the Stun Spore would freeze them. She always supported Organic Products. Plus she wouldn't buy tranquilizers from the drug stores because they were damn expensive. After she'd collected the needed amount of Stun Spore, the Oddish plunged into the soil patch. The colour on the leaves atop their heads became brighter the longer they submerged in it.

As the Oddish frolicked in the soil patch, Aviva went to retrieve the jar in which she stored the Caterpie. She uncapped the lid and brought one out. She opened her mouth big and prepared to swallow the insect when she heard a ferocious tapping on the glass panel above her.

She looked up. A pair of red eyes were glaring at her.
