  Ding-dong!

  "Ruff, ruff, ruff!"

Bastille's barking caused Alex to blink awake from his hyper focus. He always went nuts when company arrived. Alex looked away from his laptop in annoyance. "Someone put the dog outside!" he shouted, but the barking continued. He heaved a scoffing sigh and tried to dive back into his work. He had hours of work to get done this weekend, and all he wanted was silence and solitude.

  "Dad?"

His office door squeaked open not much later. There was his son Philip, now fifteen, with a troubled look on his face. Looks like he wasn't getting what he wanted, but when did Alex ever get what he wanted?

Alex pulled his laptop screen down a bit and looked over at his son. "What is it, Philip?"

Philip closed the office door and shuffled forward. "I'm sorry, Dad, I know you're busy..."

  "What's the matter, son?"

Philip sighed, his face growing pink. "How did you, uh... how did you get Mom's attention?"

Hamilton raised his eyebrows. "You mean when we first met?"

Philip stared at the ground, crumpling the hem of his white button-down as he nodded ashamedly.

"I take it Miss Theodosia's here," Alex quipped, which made Philip's face go from pink to red.

"Dad..." he complained in a husky voice.

Alex chuckled. Theodosia Burr had been Philip's good friend the last few years. He wasn't particularly fond of her father, but the girl was sweet and smart as a whip; Alex quite enjoyed discussing current events with her.  And with the way Philip smiled when she was around and talked about her when she wasn't, Alex had figured this day was coming.

He shut his laptop and gazed out the window, taking himself back to the day he met his wife. "It was a winter night. We were both in college, and they were hosting a big gala..."

He could feel himself there, even now. How freezing he was when he entered the ballroom. It was below 20 degrees that night, and Alex had way too much work to do, but his roommate and best friend, John Laurens, was adamant.

"Lin-Manuel Miranda's performing!" he argued. "The whole campus's gonna be there!" His other roommates, Hercules Mulligan and Lafayette backed John up, egging Alex on.

"Have a little fun, frérot!" Lafayette said.

"You can't be that boring, dude," Hercules taunted.

Alex rolled his eyes. He knew they wouldn't take no for an answer. "Alright, alright, fine. But if I fail out of school because of you guys, I'm living in one of your basements someday."

"Frightening, but I think that's a risk we're willing to take," replied John, grinning. "Now c'mon, let's go!"

Hercules drove the four of them to the ballroom. The run from the parking lot to the lobby was the coldest Alex had ever experienced. What was he doing here? He could be at his dorm with a warm mug of coffee in his hand as he prepared for next week's biology test.

Alex watched John meet up with his date- some girl named Martha that he wouldn't shut up about- and Hercules and Lafayette go off in their own directions, and Alex was quickly left alone.
