CHAPTER 7
THE A TEAMJUNE 2, 2002
- THE UMBRELLA ACADEMYNUMBER seven stood at the top of the stairs, her father standing next to her. Her siblings stood at the bottom of the staircase, all looking up at the pair. Number Seven blew the whistle at the signal of a nod from her father. The group began to charge up the stairs, pushing one another out of the way to make it up quicker.
"That's not fair, Five's cheating!" Two shouted up at their father as Five teleported to be in front of him.
"He's adapted." Reginald shouted down the stairs at him.
"Why's Eight not moving father?" Seven asked looking at the unmoving child at the bottom of the stairs.
"She's waiting." He replied with a smirk.
"For what?" Seven asked.
"You'll see soon enough, Number Seven." Reginald turned to Seven with a smirk and a nod.
At the bottom of the stairs stood Eight, a bored expression on her face as her father's words from earlier rang out in her head:
'Don't move once that whistle blows, only once they have all almost made it up those stairs are you to move. Okay?'
It had been an odd request for her father but nothing out of the ordinary to her coming from him. She heard the footsteps quicken above, signalling that her siblings had nearly made it to the top. Eight readied herself, getting into a running position before launching herself up the stairs.
It was a weird sensation to describe as she raced up the steps, it was as if time had slowed and sped up all at the same time. Like someone had pressed both the pause and forwards button. Her body did not know what to do, it was as if butterflies had erupted from her stomach into her legs and down to her toes. But nothing beat the adrenaline that filled her body or the wind that racked through her hair as she ran faster than light.
As she passed her siblings, she ensured that One and Two would not make it up the stairs first, tying their laces together in hopes that they would trip and fall. She stepped up beside her father and clicked the stop button on his stopwatch that was hidden in his book - reserved for only her timings.
Time sped up once again, the sounds of footsteps, panting and falling reaching Eight's ears.
"Hey! Eight tied our shoelaces together!" One shouted standing up with Two.
