- THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY

GRACE set the record onto the turntable, the seedless dropping onto the disk. The sounds of a man's voice echoed through the room as she walked over to the entrance hall. She rung the bell that was within her hand, signalling that the food was ready to be eaten. The children's footsteps approached, stopping in front of their respective seats. Eight and Seven remained at the end of the table, furthest away from their father's place, a space left between them at the head of the table. The children had been placed in number order, the lowest being closest to their father, the highest being the furthest. Two spaces remained empty on either side of him, allowing a rift between the siblings and their father. Reginald walked into the dining room after the children, settling into place behind his chair.

"Sit." He commanded, causing all of the children to settle into their chairs.

They all dug into their food, stealing glances with one another but no one actually dared to speak in front of their father. Six's hand slipped down to his side, grabbing a hold of Eight's that was perched on her lap, a sign of his affection towards her. In his other hand, he held a book that was in too small of a font for Eight to read the title of from where she was sat. Two's food remained untouched, the boy being too preoccupied with stabbing one of his knives into the arm of his chair. Four sat beside Six, shovelling food into his mouth greedily with his hands.

Reginald sipped his drink, holding eye contact with a furious looking Five, who stabbed his knife into the table out of anger. The sound made the siblings jump out of shock of their brother's actions.

"Oh god." Eighth mumbled under her breath. "This ought to be good."

"Number Five?" Reginald asked in a booming voice.

"I have a question." Five stated, continuing to stare at their father.

"Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules. No talking during mealtimes." Reginald continued to eat his meal. "You are interrupting Herr Carlson."

Five pushed his plate further away from him, crossing his arms on the table.

"I want to time travel." Five stated.

"No." Reginald sighed as the topic was brought up again.

"But I'm ready. I've been practising my spatial jumps, just like you said." Five stood, teleporting to beside his father. "See? And, you allowed Eight to time travel."
