Jimin's heart was about to beat out of his chest. His art teacher was, once again, assigning groups, and Jimin was bouncing on the tips of his toes, bubbling with anxiety that Yoongi might be in his group. He was just really hoping Taehyung was, because if not, he may not be able to survive.
"...Taehyung, Jimin, and Yoongi, you'll be a group."
Any shred of hope Jimin had left was drained from his body, as was the color from his face. His eyes darted to where Taehyung sat beside him, staring with pleading eyes at the younger. He felt he was about to break down and cry, but couldn't. Taehyung gave him a look of sympathy before standing up. Jimin reluctantly followed suit, and they made their way to where Yoongi sat.
"Alright, everyone, get to work!"
The room filled with chatter as people began discussing what to do for their project, but Yoongi, Taehyung, and Jimin stayed silent. Things were simply too awkward between the three of them. Taehyung could feel the tension, specifically between Yoongi and Jimin. So thick, you could cut it with knife. Jimin wasn't going to say a word to Yoongi, and it was clear that Yoongi couldnt even look up to meet the younger's gaze.
So, Taehyung stepped in to try and ease the tension away.
"We, uh... we should get started. What do you guys think we should do?"
Jimin sat down on the stool nearest him, and started thinking. He thought for a good moment, weighing different ideas in his mind. When a good one came to mind, he smiled slightly. He was about to voice his idea, but was interrupted by Yoongi's low voice.
"Are you mad at me?"
Jimin froze. He knew the question was directed at him, and his heart was racing within seconds. He really didn't want to answer that question. He really didn't even want to face the elder. But, he knew he'd have to at some point. So that may as well be know.
Jimin swallowed the lump in his throat as neither of them noticed Taehyung slowly slipping away from them, trying to leave them alone to talk things out. It wasn't his place to intrude on their conversation.
"I--"
"You don't have to lie," Yoongi cut him off. He looked up to finally meet Jimin's eyes with his own. "I understand if you are. Though I don't really know what I did... I understand."
Jimin felt really guilty now. He didn't know how much his avoiding him had affected the elder until now. He was so obviously hurt over it, and it hurt Jimin to see that.
"I'm not mad at you, Yoongi."
"Then why have you been avoiding me?"
Yoongi already knew the answer, of course. But he wanted to hear Jimin say it. He wanted Jimin to admit it to him.
Jimin fiddled with his fingers. "It's... it's complicated."
Yoongi sighed and looked down at his hands. He thought and thought about their current situation as an idea crossed his mind. Maybe it would be too much for the younger to take in all at once, Yoongi considered that much. But maybe it was also something Jimin needed to hear, and something Yoongi needed to voice. Yoongi's heart raced as he took a deep breath. He prepared himself for what was to come. He replayed his words in his mind to make sure they sounded right before going through with his idea.
"I like you, Jimin," he said somewhat confidently. He didnt look up to see Jimin's face of confusion. "I like you a lot. And not as a friend. I really, really like you. And you have the right to know. And although I'm no Billie Eilish," he paused, smiling slightly at his words before lifting his head to meet Jimin's gaze of utter shock, "I think you're absolutely perfect."
