I laid on my bed staring at the ceiling for a long while, getting lost in my own thoughts. My entire body wrapped in a cacoon of blankets.
I stayed this way until...Knock
knock"Come in." I said, not bothering to look at the direction of the door.
"Olá, querida." Mom said with a sweet smile on her face.
"I was just wondering if you would like to come downstairs for dinner?"
I shifted my gaze away from the ceiling and onto my mother standing at the doorway. Making sure to cover my face in the process.
"Obrigado mãe. But I'm not that hungry. I might just grab an apple from the kitchen or something."
She looked at me with concern.
"Are you sure, honey?"
In order to convince her I gave her a quick nod and answered her as politely as I could.
"Sim mãe, I'm completely sure. There's nothing to worry about."
Mom didn't seem all that convinced by my response. She stepped through the doorway and walked towards me. I shifted to one side of the bed to make room for her to sit down.
"Honey, I can tell something is wrong. You know you can tell me anything."
"I know, Mom. I'm just having an off day and I really want to be alone right now." I said, my voice muffled by the blanket.
"Alright, I can respect that. Just know that I'm here for you if you need me. And if you change your mind, I'm always here to talk. Okay?"
I gave her a nod in response.
Mom reached out to kiss my forehead.
"Te amo, Ana-Lia."
"Também te amo, mãe."

Mom left after a short while, which provided me the small window of opportunity to relax. This, however did not last long as I heard a few set of knocks a minutes later.

Knock
Knock
KnockGuess I'm popular today.
"Yes?" I asked.
"Lia, It's Kate. Can you let me in? Pretty please?!?" She said, practically yelling from the other side of the door.
"Coming." I said as I carefully got up.
I grabbed an old turtleneck from my closet and immediately put it on, making sure to cover my lips. I proceeded to open the door, my hand on my side in a vein attempt to soothe pain. I looked down at Kate clutching a laptop close to her chest and almost beaming with excitement. I slowly bent down to her level and looked at her with a small grin on my face.
"What are you up to, little miss?" I asked in a suspicious tone.
"Well I saw mommy come down the steps and she told me you had a rough day. So I thought we could watch something on daddy's laptop to cheer you up."
