CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

I remembered of a time when I was younger, a distant vision of my parents together during their youth. I was only a babe at the time, my wondrous eyes looking up at them with great curiosity. I watched from my highchair as my mother had stood behind a stove with an impassive and tired expression etched onto her face. Her worn down fingers grasped at the wooden spoon that stirred a large pot of goulash. Her long, beach waved ebony hair draped around her shoulders down to the smalls of her lower back. Her crystalline eyes gazed downward into the pasta. They seemed sad.

Not too soon later, my father waltzed into the kitchen, his beard dark and scruffy. His hair was fluffy and brown, just like my moms; but had gray streaks that signified his aging. "Vernon, where'd you put the ground garlic?" Mom asked, and moved towards the sink to wash her fingers off.

"Dunno. Where did you put it, Donna?" My father teased, stalking toward her. "I want to finish dinner so I can go and lay down." Mom groaned, and I tilted my head innocently, a strand of dribble stretching from my bottom lip.

My father stopped directly behind her, and my mother placed her hands on either side of the sink as she gazed out of the window that showed a view of a large field with the trees of Northern Ireland. Arms were wrapped around my mothers torso comfortingly, and my father rested his chin on her shoulder as he held my mother from behind. She flinched away from his arms for a moment, unsure, but seconds later she relaxed and leaned her back against his chest and placed her hands on his arms that hugged her waist.

"I'm sorry, hun." My dad whispered to my mother, rubbing his thumb softly against the fabrics of her shirt that overlaid her stomach. I heard her sniffle and not respond to my fathers soft and comforting words.

I wiggled my tiny feet and kicked my sausage legs back and forth, cooing, my lips moist with spittle. My parents turned around, and when their eyes laid upon my figure, their faces both seemed to brighten up. They both made way to me, and poked my cheek softly, leaning over and looking into my eyes with adoration. I gurgled with a big toothless, smile and kicked my chunky legs back and forth, flailing my carrot fingers around in the air.

My parents had always made me so happy.

Mom held out her own finger, longer and slimmed down, her purple nail polish chipping away. I wrapped my tiny hand around it, and dribbled spit all down myself. Mom smiled warmly, tears in her eyes as she looked upon her son. "He's everything we've ever dreamt of." She whispered to dad, whom had already grabbed a paper towel and began wiping away my drool. He snaked an arm around her waist and pulled her closer to his side, a smile tugging on the corners of his lips as well.

"Yeah. Yeah he is."

The happy moment was interrupted when we heard bubbling from behind us, and mom and dad both froze in their actions. "Shit! I left the goulash on the heat!" Mom hissed, and I tilted my head when dad scolded her for her foul language. Mom yelped and shielded her face with her arms as red tomato sauce erupted from the pot and splashed in every direction like a volcano. She squinted her eyes and faced away from the pot and without looking, she grasped the handle and slid it off the burner.

Another eruption of sauce exploded, some landing on her arm and in her hair. She cursed, way more than a child's innocent ears should hear, as it burned at her skin. She raced to the sink and put her arm under rushing cold water, and sighed of relief. "Are you alright?" My father said slowly, eyeing my mother with his eyebrow furrowed.

Mom turned to look at him, her face bland. "Vernon, this is one of those rare occasions where I'd ask you not to distract me while I'm cooking, else the house will be wearing our food next time!" She said strictly, eyes shooting daggers into his. They stared for a moment, before erupting into hearty laughter. Mom removed her hand from the running water, and flicked it at dad, who flinched. "Oh?" He raised a brow, his laughter silencing.

Mom froze, her lips forming a circle, realizing what she'd done. A snort escaped her nose, and then the two broke off away into a sprint through the house. "I'll teach you to mess with me!" My dad growled, and in which was followed along with a laugh, their voices faded away as they raced further into our house, leaving me alone in the kitchen.

My smile remained, and I wiggled around my seat in joy; mom and dad's happiness reflecting upon my own.
