As I arrived at Baristas, the bell above me jangled while I entered, and instantly the scent of brewed coffee beans fill my nostrils pleasantly. I took a deep breath in, scraped my shoes against the carpet and sauntered further on inside.
I looked around and to my surprise, found that not many people had been here today. Usually there were quite a bit more pedestrians in this small shop. Teenagers squished together in corner benches with to-go coffee cups scattered on the table as they chatted quietly to each other and at some points; bursting out into fits of laughter. Others, would either sit alone at a table of their own with a newspaper or book held in their hands, or even a laptop at their fingertips, like me, or with one other person, chatting softly to each other in content. It was odd to see the place so deserted and less lively as I had been used to.
"They're probably holed up in their homes or workplaces because of the storm." A sweet voice called from ahead of me, causing me to turn towards them. "Alma," I rasped, a smile pulling at my lips. "How have you been?"
"Alive and well, I suppose." She responded, tucking a strand of her shiny and soft ebony hair behind her ear; exposing a couple of black studs lining her lobe and cartilage. "I expect you would like your usual?" She mused with a smile, already pulling a plastic cup from a cupboard above her. I nodded and grinned in return. "You know me so well, Alma." I placed a five-dollar-bill on the counter in front of me, and turned to make way to my usual corner seat of the shop, that had resided right beside the window.
"Of course, you're a regular Colin. You didn't think I wouldn't catch on? You order the same thing every time you come here." She exclaimed from across the shop and I chuckled softly to myself, pulling my Dell laptop from my bag and turning it on. "You don't want your tip?" She asked, wiggling the bill in her finger tips as she walked over already with a steaming expresso held in her other hand.
"Keep it, Alma. You deserve it; what with all your hard work here in the shop."
She smiled warmly, her hazel eyes meeting my own after she set the cup beside my hand on the round table before me. "You're always so kind to me. Who am I to deserve such a fair amount of money?" She teased and a hearty laugh escaped both our lips. Once our fits of laughter and jokes were set aside, she turned and generously said, "Enjoy." and returned to her work.
Not soon after she reappeared behind the counter, the door was swung open and the bell jingled. Not looking up from my laptop as my fingers tapped away already at the keyboard with headphones nestled into my ears, I paid no mind of the blonde man that waltzed into coffee shop.
But I didn't know that. Yet.
Until he took me by surprise and sat himself across from me at my table, settling in with a bagged croissant and a coffee in his hands. With widened eyes, I looked up, yanked my earbuds from their crevices and slapped my laptop shut.
"Bradley?"
"Fancy seeing you here, Colin."
