MASK: A mask conceals the scarred face and damaged nose. Even his mother was horrified at the sight of him, and he earned his living as a circus freak early in his life.
SKIN: Horrible, yellowed skin stretches tightly across his face and hands.BODY: Erik, the phantom, is thin to the point of being bony. His dark coat fits badly and hangs loosely on his body.
HANDS: His ice-cold hands smell of death.
Rumors of a ghost circulate at the Opera Garnier in Paris. The ghost is said to bring havoc and ruin when displeased. An eccentric, deformed musician named Erik lives in secret quarters hidden below the opera house. He sleeps in a coffin and never shows his disfigured face. Erik demands that the managers of the opera pay him a monthly salary and keep a theater box reserved for him at every performance. He threatens disaster if his wishes are not met. When two new managers take over the opera house, they refuse to meet Erik's demands. They think the arrangement is a prank invented by the former managers.
Erik begins to give voice lessons to Christine, a young soprano. He coaches her through the wall of her dressing room, claiming her dead father sent him as an Angel of Music. Her performances improve and Erik falls in love with her. He puts on a mask to hide his repulsive face and takes her to his lair beneath the opera. As they sing a duet together, Christine cannot contain her curiosity. She rips off Erik's mask to reveal his shocking face.
DID YOU KNOW?
When Erik hears of Christine's plans to leave Paris with another man, he kidnaps her from the stage during a performance. He insists that Christine marry him. He warns her that he will blow up the Opera Garnier if she refuses.
The cavern beneath the opera house where Erik lives was created during its construction. When water is pumped from the foundation pit of the building, a subterranean river was formed.
Erik maintains a torture chamber beneath the opera house. A stagehand is found hanged near the entrance to the chamber.
The opera phantom is a murderer and a torturer. Erik's weapon of choice is a lasso made of rope. He uses it to strangle his victims.
