EYES: Only a faint reflection remains where his eyes once were

BODY: His body has faded away, making him invisible to mortals, but the Nazgul's form is visible beneath his black cloak.
MOUTH: A Nazgul's black breath is poisonous and can give mortals a case of Black Shadow. He speaks in terrible cries that cause terror and despair.
SWORD: He is armed with a steel sword, but his greatest weapon is the terror that radiates from the Nazgul.

A Nazgul is one of nine human kings who fell under the spell of Lord Sauron because of their greed. Each Nazgul has one of the Rings of Power. Sauron's One Ring controls the nine rings, making the Nazgul his servants. They become immortal, bound to the power of the One Ring. However, their immortality is unbearable: they live in shadows and carry darkness with them. Their bodies are visible only to Sauron. Their greatest power is the ability to instill fear. Their poisonous black breath gives mortals Black Shadow, which causes nightmares, despair, unconsciousness, and even death.

Sauron commands the Nazgul to steal the One Ring from Bilbo the hobbit. Dressed as riders in black, the Nazgul seek out Bilbo, riding black horses that were bred to endure terror. But Bilbo's nephew Frodo now holds the ring. At the circle of ruins on the hill called Weathertop, the lead Nazgul stabs Frodo in the arm with a poisoned sword. The wound never fully heals. When the One Ring falls into the fires of Mount Doom, all the Nazgul are destroyed.

DID YOU KNOW?

As servants of Sauron bound to the One Ring, the Nazgul are kept in their undead state by their Rings of Power. Destruction of the One Ring is the only way to erase the Nazgul.

When angered, a Nazgul appears in a fierce fire. Their leader, the Witch-King of Angmar, has a sword that can burst into flame.

The Nazgul are also referred to as Dark Riders, Black Riders, and the Nine Riders.

When the Nazgul take over the Tower of Black Magic, the once bustling city becomes as silent as a graveyard. No lights appear in any of the windows and a foul smell hangs over the city. Anyone nearing the Tower of Black Magic runs the risk of being driven insane.
