That afternoon, Queenie brought Tina some lunch, and they sat together in her office, enjoying bread rolls and salad. After work, the sisters found a quiet alleyway and disapparated back to their home.
Tina held the door open for Queenie as they arrived, and she hung her coat up on the stand next to Tina's hat. Newt ambled into the living room at that moment, hands in pockets and beaming.
"Hey guys," he drawled, grinning widely. "Jacob is home."
"Hi Newt," chirped Queenie, pulling her shoes off.
"Jacob?"
He appeared round the corner as soon as Queenie called his name. Jacob enveloped Queenie in a hug before pressing a kiss to her cheek, then let her help him with preparing some dinner.
Tina gave Newt a somewhat awkward smile and carried her work bag into her room. Since the year was coming to an end, everyone at MACUSA was cramming as much work as they could into the remaining few days to get it out of the way.
Newt sauntered into the room after her, to her surprise and slight suspicion.
"Watcha got there?"
Tina looked up at him, unclipping her bag.
"Paperwork. What are you doing in my room, Newt?"
This seemed to halt him. Newt thought for a moment, rebuffed.
"You know, I'm not actually sure," he mused, and walked straight back out.
Tina frowned after him.
Newt didn't talk much through dinner, and Tina started to become worried. She kept reminding herself that Newt didn't normally talk a lot, but she couldn't think of an excuse for him when he tried to drink his soup with a fork.
By the end of dinner, Tina decided to investigate.
"Queenie?"
Queenie was currently washing dishes, then ordering them to float into the rack with her wand.
"What did you put in today's breakfast?"
She stopped her washing up and turned to face her older sister.
"Nothing. What's all this about, Teenie?"
Tina glanced around, in case Newt was hanging around the kitchen somewhere.
"It's Newt. He's acting all... strange."
"Have you noticed?" She added.
Queenie cocked her head to the left. She flicked her wand and let the dishes wash themselves before approaching Tina warily.
"I didn't put anything weird in any of my food. How is he acting strange?"
Tina beckoned for her younger sister to follow her.
Queenie peeked round the door to Newt and Jacob's room as Tina strode straight inside.
"Hello, Newt," she announced.
He was sitting on the edge of his bed, trying to read a book upside down.
Queenie frowned. He was definitely acting strange.
Newt looked up at her and beamed.
"Hello! Care to join me, Pickett?"
Queenie's mouth dropped open.
Tina gave her a knowing look and tentatively sat down next to him.
"Oh! Hold on... sorry, Tina," he muttered, correcting himself.
"What are you reading, Newt?" She tried.
Newt looked thoughtfully back at his book, then at Tina.
She waited a beat before helping him out by taking the book from his hands and turning it the right way round. He flashed her a smile and pulled the book from her hands again.
"Right. It's..."
Newt frowned at the title, printed in elegant gold lettering in contrast with the faded blue cover.
"A History of American Wizardry. Oh."
Tina looked at him inquisitively. He grinned back at her. Queenie had seen enough. She went to pull out her wand just as he said something else.
"You're really beautiful, you know," Newt mumbled shyly, glancing at Tina and blushing.
Tina's jaw dropped, she tried and failed to say something, and ended up resembling nothing so much as a gaping fish.
Queenie went rigid, mouth hanging open and eyes wide.
Then she decided that he was definitely not okay, and gingerly approached the bed, wand in hand (and slightly dusted with flour).
She looked to Tina for conformation, but her older sister was currently gaping at Newt, who had gone pink and was smiling shyly back.
"Finite Incantatum."
Newt jerked suddenly, looked like a bucket of ice-cold water had been thrown over him, and promptly fell unconscious onto the bed.
Tina looked up at her sister, who grinned back.
"Looks like you have an admirer!"
Tina's own cheeks heated, and she risked a glance back at Newt, sprawled on the bed.
"Shut up," she muttered, turning a bright shade of red herself.
Queenie beamed back at her.
"He'll be okay. He can probably tell us what happened himself when he wakes up."
And with that, she skipped back out the door.
"I could always tell he fancied you," Queenie mused as she disappeared round the corner.
Tina was about to send a jinx after her, but decided against it, for some reason she couldn't pinpoint.
Instead, she resumed her position on the bed, watching Newt for any sign of consciousness. Or recollection of memory.
hehehehehe the title sort of gave it away...
I said it earlier and I'll say it again: I really hate how this story keeps jumping from theme to theme- I had a few ideas and I decided to tie them together in a fanfiction instead of writing oneshots. Actually, I didn't know what oneshots were at the time, so this seemed like the only option...
I'll try to incorporate some meaning and smooth bridges between all of the ideas, but I'm sorry that this is so sloppily written.
Okay it's obviously called Confundus because Tina and Queenie are confused by Newt's behaviour and *SPOILER ALERT but you potterheads could probably tell anyways lol*...
*whispers* Newt is under a confundus charm...
I'm sorry but you could probs tell tbh
And I wanted Newt to accidentally say something nice to Tina (that he probably wouldn't have said in a normal state of mind) without getting anyone drunk or something bc I probably shouldn't be writing about that at 13...
Anyways, vote, comment, and drop by any advice or suggestions!
