Smile, they say. Be happy. It's just a phase they say. Is it just a phase when they end up in hospital for weeks on end possibly fighting for their life?
It gets better they say. You're overreacting, it's not that bad. I know how you feel, they say. But do you really? How can you possibly know when you don't reside in their head. You don't truly know how your words affect them. How your actions make them feel. You don't feel the all-consuming hopelessness. The fear and anxiety, the irritation that nobody understands them. But it's ok.. it's not always your fault.
How can you when you're battling your own demons. When you're living your life with that perfect girl or guy, complaining about the mundane things in life. But meanwhile there's people out there contemplating life. Wondering what their purpose is. Questioning their worth and coming up short. How can you possibly even begin to understand that? When your biggest worry is what you're gonna have for dinner or when you're next getting payed.
People are taking their lives and some of y'all have the nerve to judge them.
You turn around and say he or she took the easy way out. Suicide is by no means the easy way out. It's not an easy decision to make that's for sure. But to someone who's seriously suffering it can seem like the only way out. It doesn't matter how those around them might feel. It's not about them, in that moment it's only about the individual suffering. And if someone is going through such a hard time that they believe suicide is the only way out, it's not your place to decide whether they're taking the easy way out. Don't try to judge someone if you've never been in their situation.
It'll be okay, they say. Talk to me, maybe I can help. Thanks, but how do you know that? Can you tell the future? And what if they don't want to talk. Not because they don't want the help no, internally they're crying for help. But what if they feel like no one can help. That what they say will only make them sound crazy or that you just can't do anything.
Back to the beginning. It's just a phase, they say. Was it a ;"phase" when she was only crushing on girls but didn't tell her friends because she feared their reaction? Was it a "phase" when he introduced you to his mysterious fiancé and you realized it was a guy? Was it a "phase" when you're daughter is walking down the isle on her big day and she says I do to her wife?
The answer is no. That short sentence can destroy a person believe it or not. When a family member or friend comes out to you, never respond with oh it's just a phase I'm sure you'll grow out of it or start crying because you think you won't get grandkids. The world is advancing people. If a couple decides they don't want kids it's probably for personal reasons. There's absolutely no reason why every couple can't have kids now if they really want to.
These are two topics I'm very passionate about and. Decided to write this piece because I wanted to draw attention to the attitudes of some people today in society.
Apparently it's wrong to be depressed. It's wrong not to be straight. So does that mean we should all be robots then? Because surely our emotions would always conform with what society views as normal right?
Well I'm telling you that you're allowed to be depressed, you're allowed to show emotion, and you're certainly allowed to love whoever you want. We're all human and that's the only thing that should matter. Support each other and be happy for each other. It'll make life that much more bearable.
This one was written for many different reasons, hence it being so long.
Anyway I hope you liked it. One more on the way again from a few weeks ago.
The song chosen is kind of related to it, but I chose it mainly because it was my inspiration for the title.
