This poem was written back in 2018, on October 9th.
Not quite sure how I missed publishing it, either way I hope you enjoy.
We're JUST THE SAME AS YOU
Yes, we may be blind, yes we may not be able to see much or at all but what does that matter? Just be cause a blind teenager can't see themselves in the mirror, does.not mean they can't develop an eating disorder. More times than not eating disorders develop because of what's going threw the person's mind.. I would know...
Again just because we're blind or visually impaired does not mean we can't self-harm and cut. It doesn't have to be done with sight, you have two hands for a reason.
Just because we're blind does not mean we can't have suicidal thoughts. Again that's more of a mental thing. It's like saying just because you've lost your sight you've lost the ability to solve problems, that's absolutely ridiculous.
Just because we might not be able to see how you react to us behind our backs or hear something that someone says, does not mean that we're not affected by bullying. Millions of blind and visually impaired people have depression around the world today and I can guarantee that most of it is because we experienced a form of bullying at some point in our lives.
Just because we're blind or visually impaired certainly does not mean we can't have crushes or fall in love. Some people might ask you if you're blind, how can you stand not being able to see your boyfriend, girlfriend husband or wife? And I expect the answer would be something along the lines of, well I didn't fall for them because of the way they look. That's the most simple answer, but it's more than that. Hearing their voice every dayand feeling their touch is enough for me. Plus it's not like I have no idea whatsoever, you'd be mad to think that I'm with someone and never ask them to describe their looks to me. I can use my imagination to form a picture in my mind. And what's more, looks aren't everything. Personality is way more important, because personally I'd rather be with the most kind hearted, loyal, funny, intelligent and loving guy there is then the hottest. Because whether you like it or not, sighted people in particular those looks will change one day. You'll get wrinkles and other stuff.
Just because we're blind or visually impaired does not mean we can't have children. I personally know some blind parents and I'd say that they're actually doing better than most sighted parents. I intend to join that crowd in the future, again parenting isn't all about sight. We might need a little assistance along the way, but there's no reason we can't do it altogether.
I could go on but I won't because I think you get my point by now. If not then read it again!
We may be blind, we may be visually impaired and not be able to see every last detail, but we're no different to the rest of you. There's a few things we can't do, but personally I'm not too upset because I never want to drive anyway.
But please remember the next time you come across one of us that we're no different to you. Treat us like equals and don't be afraid to have a normal conversation and ask lots of questions.
