Just a day. Just an ordinary day. Just trying to get by. Vanessa Carlton's lyrics swam through my mind as I clutched my text books a little closer to my chest and made my way through the crowded corridors. I pushed past some kids who were making out to get to my locker. I leaned my head on the cold metal door and just breath. I hated this, all of it. Not just school, but everything. It was just all too much sometimes. I just wanted to escape.
The morning bell sounded, echoing off the tiled floors and resounding off the walls. It was mayhem, kids running in every direction to get to class. I trailed behind, like a tumbleweed, following after them. I dawdled to class, dragging my feet. It's not that I hated learning, because truly, I loved it. It's just that I hated this place.
I sit my seat in the back row just as Miss Nguyen bounds into class. She's always so happy. I don't know how she does it. I yawn as she begins to take the roll and I begin to scan the faces of my classmates who have all come back to this hellhole school for another year. My gaze falls on one unfamiliar face in the sea recognisable faces. He sat slumped in his chair, only listening to Miss Nguyen when she called his name. I only caught a snatch of his name because to be honest I wasn't listening myself. I'm pretty sure it started with a C. Charlie? No that wasn't it. I racked my brain but couldn't remember the name I'd heard just a few seconds ago. I watched as he flicked his floppy, black hair to remove it from his eyes. I cringed. From his simple body language I can tell which clique he would fit into. The 'popular' kids.
And I was right. By first break he was already accepted into their group. I watched from the library window as they sat at their table, the girls batting their eyelids and clicking their fake nails and the guys sharing stories about girls and fights. The new kid fit in quite well. He said something to them and they all threw their heads back, roaring with laughter. I shook my head. I would never understand kids like that. I turned from the window and forgot all about the black haired boy.
The day flew by and before I knew it I was opening my front door to a house filled with the aroma of spaghetti. Dumping my bag in the foyer, I made my way up to my room and shut the door. This was the best part of the day. I sifted through my CD's and stopped at The Beatles 'Abbey Road' album. Popping it into my laptop, I turned the volume right up. I flopped down on my bed and just listened to the music. I absorbed it. I let it take over
'Here Comes The Sun' was playing when my mother rudely barged in.
"Could you please turn that down dear?" she asked, slightly forcefully.
"Here comes the Sun. Do do do do," I sang at the top of my lungs, just to prove a point.
"I'll take that as a no then." She turned around and closed the door behind her, leaving me and my music in peace.
I fell asleep and only awoke to the slamming of a door. The door must have been slammed pretty hard because I could hear it over my music. I jolted upwards and shook my head. He was home. I pressed my ear to the wall and waited. It was quiet. This must have been the first night that it hadn't happened. I began to smile but stopped as I hear the screaming begin. I sigh, collapsing back onto my bed and falling asleep to the sounds of screams.
