I awoke to the screeching sound of a branch scratching on my window. Sighing, I made a mental note to tell dad about it. I wrapped myself in a blanket and opened the window. The warm summer breeze hit my cheeks, pushing loose strands of hair out of my eyes. I clambered out of the window and sat on the mini roof thing that extended from it. I watched as fit people jogged and rode past on their bikes. The weather had changed so drastically over the past few weeks, but it was nice. Change was good.
There was a knock on my bedroom door.
"Come in," I called. My mum came into my room with a cup of hot chocolate.
She sighed, seeing me on the roof.
"Hazel, what are you doing out there?"
Living life on the edge. You know carpe diem, sucking the marrow out of life," I smiled.
Handing me the hot chocolate she said "Just don't choke on the bone."
I laughed. Mum and I had watched Dead Poets Society way too many times.
"Any plans for today?" she asked.
"Nope," I replied, popping the p.
Mum sighed. "Well, if that changes let me know." She left my room, closing the door on her way out.
Clasping my mug in my hands, I took little sips, trying to savour it for as long as I could. The warm sun became too hot and I slipped the blanket from off my shoulders. And so I sat there, on the roof in my boxers and an oversized t-shirt. I slid down a bit further so I could lie down.
A voice shouted from below.
"Hey weirdo, what are you doing up there?"
I groaned. They mocked me at school, did they really have to do it at my own home as well?
"Well are you going to at least acknowledge my existence Hazel Francessca?"
I bolted up right and almost fell off the roof. There was only one person that called me by my full name. I peered over the edge and saw the one and only Calum Hood.
"How do you know where I live?" I asked hesitantly.
He just smiled and held something out. I squinted and couldn't see it. My glasses were in my room.
"One sec. I'm coming down," I called out as I reached for a sturdy branch. I held on to the closest branch and jumped down to another. I climbed across to the right to grab hold to another branch and jumped to another and swung to the ground.
Calum's eyes were wide. "You're full of surprises aren't you?"
I smiled and took the book from his hands. It was my copy of 'Wreck This Journal'.
"How did you get this?"
Calum just shrugged. He turned around and walked away. He stopped.
"I followed the instructions," he said simply and resumed walking.
I flipped through the pages of the book. The first page tells anyone who finds the book to complete a page and return it. Which page had he completed?
Turning the pages in a frenzied fashion, I found it. It was the "Write a secret message to someone on this page" page. On it Calum had written, 'Local primary school. 10 o'clock. Big slide'. I reread the message because it didn't make sense the first time. Then it clicked. The local school was having a fete today. Did Calum really expect me to go to that? I never went to those sorts of things. I never had anyone to hang out with and they were kind of boring. It was mainly just little, spoilt kids running around. I looked at the page one more time before turning to face the house.
"Mum! I'm going out!"
