I sat on my bed, hugging my turtle pillow pal close to my chest. I pulled my sleeves over my hands and proceeded to rub my eyes. It had been such a good day. Then it got ruined.
I sniffed and heard my door creak open. I turned around to find Mum standing there.
"There's someone here to see you," she croaked.
"Tell them to go away," I sniffled.
"I told him that you weren't up for visitors but he said it was important."
He? Calum? What was he doing at my house?
"Bring him up Mum."
I heard her pad down the stairs and murmur something. Before I knew it, there was a soft knock at my door.
"Come in," I said, trying my best to make it look like I hadn't been crying.
The bed sunk as Calum sat down.
"You dropped this." He held out my phone. "I'm not sure if it broke or anything... I didn't check."
"Don't worry, it's a Nokia," I joked but Calums face was solemn.
"What happened today Hazel?" he asked.
I forced a smile. "That's the first time you didn't use my full name." Calum didn't smile back. He wanted me to answer his question. "Don't worry. It's nothing."
His brow furrowed. "Are you sure?"
I nodded. "100% sure."
"And you'd tell me if something was wrong?"
I nodded vigorously.
"Okay good because I don't want you to feel like you can't tell me stuff because I'd judge you. Because I won't. You can tell me anything."
I was taken aback by his sincerity. "Really?"
"Yeah. That's what friends do isn't it?" He wrapped his arms around me and gave me a massive hug. Like one of those big matey type hugs. I couldn't help but break into a huge smile. Friend. He said he was my friend. I'd never had a friend before. I must admit. I quite liked it.

The lunch time bell rang and everybody filed out of the classroom, our new assignments clutched in our hands.
"Hazel! Hey wait up!" I turned around to see Yasmin running down the corridor. What? Why was she at my school? She didn't even go here.
"What are you doing here?" I asked as she neared.
A look of confusion swept over her face. "I go to school here..."
"When did you enrol?" I asked, curious.
"In year 7..."
I was dumbfounded. "You mean we've gone to the same school for three years and I've never noticed you?"
"Well I guess so, but to be honest I never really noticed you much until I started seeing Cal hang around you."
"Oh I see... Anyway, why were you calling me?"
"I just wanted to walk with you," Yasmin shrugged.
"Oh. Okay then."
We walked in silence for a while until Yasmin looked up at me (she was a bit shorter than me).
"Hey, Hazel, do you wanna come over mine this afternoon and we can work on the science assignment together? I know it's not really a group thing but nothing says we can't work on it together."
"Yeah sure," I smiled.
"Meet me out the front straight after school and we can walk together if you'd like."
"Sounds great."
"Okay see you then." And with that she bounded down the hall, her hair bouncing as she went.
I smiled. Two friends in three days. I was doing well for someone who had never had a friend before in her life.
