Hoisting the bag of stuff onto my shoulder, I knocked on the door. I didn't really want to be here, but I wanted to be at home even less. Mitch opened the door and smiled.
"I was being to think you wouldn't show up," he said, ushering me inside.
"Mitch, I want to move in here," I blurted rather abruptly. "But on one condition."
"Sure, what is it?"
"As soon as I turn eighteen I get to move out."
Mitch frowned. "But where are you going to go?"
"Anywhere but here," I mumbled.
"Hazel, I don't like the sound of this. That's only a couple of weeks away. I'm not sure whether you'd really be that ready to leave. Eighteen is such a young and tender age."
"Fine then, I'll just go back home and won't move in here," I shrugged, providing Mitch with an ultimatum.
He sighed. "Fine. Go upstairs and pick your room."
I wondered up the old creeky stair case and each step I took brought back on old memory. Memories of Mitch and Jayden playing tag in the hallways, memories of the days when things weren't complicated, memories of the times when I was naive enough to think that everyone agreed with the lyrics of Imagine by John Lennon.
I lifted my backpack higher on my back and continued up the staircase. I was about to walk into my old room, when I stopped. Turning around, I walked to Jaydens old room. I gently rested my head on the door. Opening it, I padded inside. It had changed so much since I had been in here last. Posters of famous soccer players and pop punk bands no longer lined the walls. There was no longer dirty clothes and pizza boxes covering the floor. Only one thing remained. On the corner of a birch dressing table was a single photo frame. Inside the frame was a photo of my family. Before all the drama. Before the drunken violence. It was us at the beach.
I remember that day so clearly. Micth, Jayden and I had buried Dad in the sand so only his head protruded from the ground. Mum sat behind in shades and a floppy hat, smiling. Jayden, Mitch and I sat around Dad each pulling a stupid face.
Picking up the photo, I placed it into my bag and left the room. Making my way into my own room, I throw my bag on the premade bed and sighed. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I'd be back here. Even though it was only going to be for a few weeks, I revelled in the idea of being back in my old home.
I grabbed my laptop and gingerly pushed my glasses further up my nose. Logging into Facebook, I was astonished at how little notificatiosn I had. It made me kind of sad that no one really cared. I guess I deserved it for being such an idiot but it would be nice to know that people still cared for me.
But no one did and that was the plain truth. My phone no longer rang. My notifications were only from game requests or people uploading photos. My email inbox was only filled with spam trying to persuade me to buy 'real' Rolex watches.
I sighed again and scrolled through my 3 new notifications. There was one that caught my eye. It read: "Yasmin Marnie has changed her relationship status." Plot twist. Cuirosity forced my to click into the notification only for me to find that Yasmin had gone from 'single' to 'in a relationship'. And Luke had commented a love heart on it.
I couldn't help but smile. It looked like Yasmin and Luke had finally gotten back together. About time too.
Mitch knocked on the door and popped his head in. "Settling in alright?"
I nodded.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
I tilted the screen so he could see.
"Oh Facebook. I didn't even know you had that."
I shrugged.
MItch made his way over to the bed and sat down, rumaging through the scattered belongings. He picked up a won, abttered copy of Catcher in the Rye.
"So, do you erm read now?" Mitch asked, avoiding my gaze.
"If you're trying to ask about my dyslexia, then yes I still have it. It's not something that you can get rid of easily."
"Oh," was all that Mitch said. An awkward silence settled in the room as we sat neither of us knowing what to say.
"Um, Mitch, could you please like go now?" I asked, trying to be nice.
"Oh yeah sure. I'll see you later I guess," he said getting up and walking out.
"Hey, Mitch?"
"Yeah?"
I smiled. "It's good to have you around."
"Yeah, you too Hazel. You too."
