Life and Death

When I wake, the room glows with a tranquility I would never have thought to experience. At this time, I would've normally already be in the laboratory— chained and secured down on whatever element my father had decided to torment me with.

But instead of restraints and pain, I'm
greeted with the soft morning light pouring through the open curtains. I could imagine getting used to this— but I couldn't.

I'd been through enough to know that good things never lasted.

Shifting off the cozy bed, I shrug off the blankets and casually put my hand against the cool doorknob.

That's the moment I realize I'm unsure of what I will find outside the barrier securing me inside this room.

Besides, I think. There was no possible way that they wouldn't have locked the door after—

The doorknob turns with a click, making a one eighty angle before the door swings open with a quiet, soft creak.

Were they kidding about being professionals, or were they just too professionals to worry about locking me in? Did they think I was no match for them?

I probably was, but that didn't mean it still didn't make me a little bit annoyed at their assumption. To be honest, I thought myself of as a pretty good fighter— considering I could disappear and all that.

My feet are firm against the wooden floor as I make my way out of the room and into a corridor. Along the sides of the walls are more doors— the exact same as the one I just came out of.

"What do you think you're doing?"

A cold voice echoes behind me, sending violent sparks of shock hissing up my spine. What was up with these people and suddenly appearing behind my back? I was starting to suspect that they possessed the same ability as mine— couldn't they just say hello like normal humans?

Pain from the fade jolts me out of my trance as I stutter, surprise still lingering in my voice.

"N-Nothing?"

When I flush at his raised eyebrow, I quickly shift the topic to something else. "Is your shoulder okay? The one with the— Hoseok— said it was...over bleeding? I don't know— and speaking of the others, where did they go?"

Possibly the most embarrassing conversation I'd ever initiated— and will ever initiate.

"They're out to do something that I'd originally planned to participate in." His glare is annoyed at me, clearly indicating that the others had made him stay back. With an injury like that, it was a wonder he was even up and moving.

Doing what?"

"Something."

My voice rises with frustration as I gaze straight into his dark, dull eyes.

"Like what?"

"Like things you don't need to know about." Then an angry sigh escapes his lips as he tears his fingers through his hair, exasperation clear as day.

"Why do I have to be stuck babysitting someone so dense?"

"Excuse me? I told you all that you people wanted to know, and now you won't even tell me one little part of your life. How is that even fair?"

He just answers me with another annoyed rush of breath and spins on his heel, clearly planning to end the discussion.

How could someone manage to be so rude and attractive at the same time?
