I See The Pain Behind That Smile

You get dressed,

They call you out,

You look at yourself,

In your eyes you silently shout,

"Please help me."

You ignore your mute pleading,

And take a deep breath,

Putting on that fake smile,

When you just really want rest,

I watch as you straighten your back,

Erase the tortured look,

You look completely different,

A whole new cover for a book,

But I see you,

How you hide,

No one notices,

They let it slide,

You walk out,

Each step breaking you farther,

You're losing it,

The pain is getting harder,

To deny,

It's creeping over your shoulder,

The voices are breaking through,

You struggle to push them back,

Refusing to let them get to you,

Don't you know,

It only becomes worse,

It builds up,

A never-ending curse,

You promise to yourself it'll get better,

You'll really smile for real,

But deep down you know the memory and wounds are permanent,

You know they'll never heal,

As you show off,

For everyone to see,

You're their puppet,

Only to look happy,

You know sadness,

It'll cause punishment,

So you have to be enthusiastic,

You can never vent,

You're all alone,

No one sees,

That you're breathing,

Special,

Not a tease,

Finally,

Everything goes blank,

You collapse,

The pain and insanity overrides you,

Like a clawing rake,

The seething pain enfolds you like a snake,

You futilely try to stand,

Refusing to give up,

While the pain rolls through you in waves,

You feel just about to corrupt,

So I come beside you,

I take your hand,

I gently pull you up,

Help you stand,

You stare at me,

In awe and shock,

Yes, I understand your pain,

As you stand as still as a rock,

You finally take my embrace,

My protecting arms,

You've always needed me,

I was your missing parts,

I'll never let you go,

You have to stay,

I truly love you,

It'll never go away........
