"Tony Stark?"
"Are you... y/n y/l/n?"
you nodded, remembering random childhood memories with the billionaire that used to be your best friend.
"You... you work for SHIELD?" he asked, hesitant and slightly nervous.
"Yeah, I do," you nodded, hating the tension between the two of you.
Why couldn't it just be like it used to? No walls or barriers just best friends against the world.
"I still have that stuffed animal you threw at me that one time." Tony grinned.
"No way! I spent months looking for it!"
"Yeah," he giggled, "It was so funny you kept asking if I could help you look,"
"Tony mcfreaking Stark you'd better give it back ASAP!" you laughed.
"No way, it's mine now."
You narrowed your eyes mischievously. "Guess I'll have to take it then."
-
"Y/N LOOK OUT!" Tony yelled, using his blasters to shoot a few enemies away from you.
Fury had sent the two of you on a mission together; the objective was simple, you were supposed to hack into the enemy database and destroy their records of SHIELD so they couldn't attack back, then disable all their weapons.
Simple enough, if the two of you could just make it to the control room.
You and Tony fought hard to make it to the control room and complete the mission, but on your way out things went wrong.
You were still too far from the helicopter when you stumbled and fell, white-hot pain spreading outwards of your shoulder.
You let out a pained shriek as you hit the ground, trying to get back up despite the bullet in your shoulder.
"Y/n!" Tony yelled, spinning around. He fired a fleet of self-guided missiles at the shooters and ran to shield you from any remaining bullets.
He let out a curse when he saw the blood now coating your shoulder.
"Ouch. Ouch. Ow. Ouch." you hissed, using a rock to pull yourself up.
Tony caught you when you were about to fall again and quickly blasted off towards the helicopter, jolting your shoulder.
You gritted your teeth to stop from crying out at the pain and you desperately held on to your consciousness that was slowly slipping away.
"God, Y/n. I promise I'll give you your stuffed animal back if you don't die on me here," Tony said, scrambling around the helicopter as it took off towards SHIELD's base trying to find you a first aid kit.
"You better give the stuffed animal back either way," you murmured tiredly before your eyes drifted shut and you fell into unconsciousness.
- [Ending One]
Everything was moving in slow motion. They'd taken you in for emergency surgery hours ago.
"Tony." Director Fury approached from the opposite end of the room.
Tony looked up.
"She didn't make it. Something," Fury carefully considered his words, then sighed. "Something went wrong during the surgery to get the bullet out. She died.
Even Fury seemed to be having trouble keeping himself composed.
She didn't make it. She didn't make it. She didn't make it. She died. The words pounded around in Tony's head, and endless loop of repeating words.
His heart started beating too fast, he felt too hot in the cold hospital, too closed off and trapped in.
"I gotta—" he choked out, standing and stumbling out the door.
He made it to the grass outside the hospital before he sunk to his knees, tears streaming down his face. He'd just gotten you back, and now the childhood memories he could remember so clearly were haunting him.
"No, no, no!" he gasped, leaning back on the bench seat, the jeans he was wearing getting dirty from the ground he was sitting on.
The funeral music played, a melancholy beat that somehow made it all the more real. You were gone. Not coming back. Hours passed, and Tony still stood there, staring at the grave that now held your body, grieving quietly. He finally let a small, pained smile paint his face and he pulled the stuffed teddy bear out of his suit jacket, placing it on your grave next to the flowers Pepper had laid there earlier.
"Goodbye, Y/n," Tony said, his voice quiet and full of pain.
- [Alternate Ending Two]
"Hey y/n." Tony smiled, pulling a chair closer to the hospital bed you were laying in.
"Sup Tony?" you propped your bed up into a sitting position. "You okay?" "Yep. I'm good. The doctors said I can even go home really soon. I probably won't be allowed on missions for a while though,"
"Well, I guess I have to give this back now." He said with a funny smile, handing you the stuffed animal you thought you lost so long ago.
"Finally! After all this time!" You playfully laughed, squeezing the stuffed animal with the arm that hadn't been shot. "You're awfully dramatic,"
"Me?! You're Tony Stark, practically the most dramatic person on the planet!" you protested.
"Yeah, but this is a stuffed animal." he pointed out.
"That has been missing for twenty plus years!" laughing, you shook your head.
The rest of the afternoon passed with the two of you acting like you'd never been apart, quickly catching each other up on your lives and diving straight into the kind of gossip that only goes on between the best of friends, laughter echoing through the room the whole time.
