The Aftermath

After Kevin came out as Bruce Wayne's son, he became a local celebrity in Gotham. He even legally changed his name to Kevin Beaumont-Wayne. Barbara, being a loyal and caring woman, stayed by Kevin's side always. Kevin never let the fame go to his head, and he remained on the show. And his fans remained loyal. And Damian considered Kevin to be his best friend.  Life remained functional for Kevin.

One morning, Kevin was cooking breakfast. Suddenly, he got a text from Barbara. The text said, "Hey babe, I'm going to visit an old friend. Want to come with me?" Kevin texted back, "Who we meeting? Are we meeting Dinah and Frankie?" Barbara texted back, "Not exactly. More like a super friend." Kevin chuckled and texted back, "Wouldn't Dinah technically be considered a super friend?" Babs texted back, "LOL, 😂 if I see Dinah, I'll tell her you said that. I'm sure she'll be flattered. But I'm not seeing her. This one's an old friend." Kevin was curious and texted, "Kara?" Babs texted back, "Nope. This super friend is no alien either. I'll give you a hint though... 😉 She's great with magic." Kevin had a feeling Babs wasn't acquainted with Raven, so he texted, "Zatanna?" Barbara texted back, "Righto. ☺ See you in the afternoon. Love you. 😘❤" Kevin smiled and texted back, "Love you too. ❤😘"

He went to the table with his breakfast, sitting next to Bruce, Alfred, and Damian. "Barbara and I are going to meet up with Zatanna today," said Kevin. "Is that so?" Bruce asked in interest, "I actually knew Zatanna's father Giovanni. He taught me a few methods of escape." He sipped his coffee. "Cool," said Damian.  "Indeed," said Bruce, "when the JLA was formed, Giovanni convinced me to join the team. Giovanni was my mentor and friend. I joined because of him." Kevin smiled. Jason walked in and asked, "You and Babs are visiting Zatanna? Cool. Is she single? Or is she still seeing that Constantine guy?" Bruce shrugged and said, "Not that I'm aware." Kevin had a feeling Jason had a crush on Zatanna.

In the afternoon, Kevin went to meet Barbara at her apartment. "So, where are we meeting Zatanna?" Kevin asked out of curiosity after kissing Barbara. "We're gonna meet Zee at the park," said Babs as she got her flats on. She put her phone, wallet, and keys in her pockets. "Zee? That's a cool nickname," commented Kevin, "you ready?" Barbara nodded and said, "Yeah. Hey ho, let's go." She winked at him, and they left her apartment. As they walked, Kevin asked, "how are ya liking that Shape of Water novel?" Babs held his hand and said, "I'm liking it so far. Being a librarian and Batgirl at the same time doesn't make it easy though. It's a miracle I can finish a chapter." Kevin chuckled and said, "I feel ya. Took me a few months until I could completely finish Pet Sematary." Babs chuckled and teased, "Too scared to finish it?" She poked his belly, his ticklish spot. Kevin retaliated by poking her side, and said, "No! Heh. I was busy with life." Babs giggled, "Don't do that!" She was trying to frown, but failed. "Next question," said Kevin, "how long have you known Zee?"

"Since I was first Batgirl," explained Barbara, "aside from Dick, Zatanna and Kara were the first superheroes I befriended. We still keep in touch. I befriended Dinah and Frankie when I was Oracle." Kevin smiled and said, "Cool. By a funny coincidence, it seems Dad knew her Dad. Taught him a few escaping tricks." Babs nodded and said, "Sounds like it. Kevin, the year I got shot was also a bad year for Zee." Kevin looked at her and asked, "What happened?" Barbara sighed sadly, "after what Joker did to me, I was in a coma for a month. During that time, there was some end of the world crisis involving the Zatara Family. As you know, Kent Nelson, the original Dr. Fate, passed away years ago, and his ancient helmet of Nabu would only be used as a last resort. If anyone wore it, it would come at a cost..."

"What would the cost be?" Kevin asked. "Once the helmet was worn, the host becomes the new Dr. Fate," explained Barbara, "but once the host becomes Dr. Fate, there's literally no going back. Their old life is over. They will forever be Dr. Fate. Giovanni made the ultimate sacrifice to save the world, and became the new Dr. Fate. He's been the host ever since then." Kevin put his hand near his mouth and said, "Oh my gosh... That must be so hard for Zee..." Barbara nodded sadly and said, "It was. But Nabu isn't without mercy. Once a year, on this day in particular, Fate allows Giovanni to remove the helmet and spend time with Zee, but for just an hour." Kevin nodded and asked, "Is that why we're visiting Zee? Emotional support?" Barbara nodded and said, "Yeah. Normally Artemis is there, or sometimes it's me. You get the idea."  They then made it to the park, and there was a woman around Barbara's age with black hair. "Hey Zee!" Barbara said excitedly, hugging Zatanna. Zatanna smiled and said, "Hey Babs." Kevin smiled awkwardly, waving hello.
