"Are they still 'bad habits' if I like them?"
By the time we got back into town I was pretty sober and just wanted to be alone and sleep for days. I dropped Piper and Joey off at his house and drove Betty to the only gas station in town to get some Ding Dongs and Dr. Pepper. I grabbed my goodies and went to check out.
Jose, the guy who owns the gas station, or his wife Lucy are usually working but tonight there was a young guy who I'd never seen before, behind the counter. He was tall with short light brown hair, bushy eyebrows and a long slightly upturned nose. His teeth almost too big for his mouth and his lips were pouty. His smile was cute but a little goofy. His body seemed average under his purple and green gas station uniform that also made him look completely dorky.
I put my stuff down and looked up at the cigarettes.
"Can I also get a pack of cigarettes." I asked the guy after he had rung up my comfort foods. I've never smoked a day in my life, but after today maybe it's time to form a new bad habit. The guy looked at me.
"Are you 18?" he asked me as if he didn't think I was.
"Uhh...Yeah! Of course." I replied.
"Smoking's bad for you, ya know." He smirked.
"I'm aware. Thanks dad." I said sarcastically rolling my eyes at him.
"You don't look like someone who smokes" he continued the conversation.
"You don't even know me..." I paused to look at his name badge "...Benjamin. I could smoke crack for all you know." I continued.
"Now you definitely don't look like a crack smoker" he laughed."Alright... if you really want them show me your ID." He said more serious.
"Fine. Benjamin. Since you don't believe me..." I said whipping out my driver's license like a boss.Benjamin stood there for a second seeming to be contemplating.
"What kind?" He finally says.
What kind? I hadn't even thought of that.
"Umm... Marlboro?" I said unsure of myself.
He grabbed a pack of Marlboro Lights and chuckled to himself while ringing them up.
"Oh Benjamin. You're the best!" I said smiling.
I paid him and started walking out of the gas station.
"Hope you have a good night... uhh... I didn't catch your name." Benjamin said smoothly.
I turned around.
"Rylee" I smiled and walked out.
I got inside of Betty and realized I didn't have a lighter!
"Change your mind about the lung cancer?" He said when I walked back in
"No! I have nothing to light my lung cancer with." I replied.
"Here." Benjamin says reaching into his pocket and pulling out a black lighter with a picture of a galaxy on it.
"It's yours." He said
"I can buy one... it's no problem." I said confused.
"I have lots... take it... saved you a buck." He stated nonchalantly.
"Why do you have a lot?" I questioned him.
He leaned towards me and whispered, "Because I smoke too."
"What?? Why'd you give me so much shit then??" I asked annoyed.
"Because someone as pretty as you shouldn't be smoking" Benjamin answered his face completely serious.
