Genesis' POV
After showing and telling me all his war stories back then, Steve led me to a large panel with a title labeled "A Fallen Comrade." There was an image of a man and next to the man were details of his life. It was a Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes memorial.
"That's Bucky," Steve began. "He...was a childhood friend of mine." He opened his mouth to continue, but he closed his mouth shut. His head hung low and his lips were pressed firmly together. Taking a glance at him because I felt something was off, I saw remorse in his face.
"Best friends since childhood, Bucky Barnes and Steven Rogers were inseparable on both schoolyard and battlefield. Barnes is the only Howling Commando to give his life in service of his country," the recording played.
He lost everyone.
"I'm sorry. You miss him, don't you? And everyone else?" Steve nodded. We both stood there, staring at James Barnes. Tilting my head, I squinted at his best friend on the panel. "He looks oddly familiar," I mumbled.
"You said something, Genesis?" Steve turned to me.
"O-oh, nothing." I sighed, staring at his fallen best friend. "I...I can't even imagine what you're feeling. You've lost..." I paused, feeling a lump rise in my throat. "...so much," I whispered the last two words.
"I know," he agreed. He turned around and walked off, and I followed him.
He entered a dimly lit room and sat on the bench. He scooted over to give me a seat. I realized that it wasn't very crowded in here. A documentary of a beautiful woman named Peggy Carter began to play on the screen.
She inspired many females to this day. She was a highly-skilled agent back in World War II, and she became one of the founders of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Did she know about HYDRA growing inside of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
Glancing at Steve, he was so immersed in the documentary as Peggy Carter recalled a moment when Captain America rescued the soldiers. I noticed that he was fiddling with something in his hands. He looked down at the object and opened it. I took a glimpse at the object. It looked like a pocket watch, a compass, or something. There was a photo of the same woman as the one we were watching in the documentary, but the female appeared to be younger in the picture.
Peggy Carter.
There was a sharp pang in my heart. My eyebrows furrowed. I placed my hand over my chest and tried to soothe the ache away. It just wouldn't leave my chest.
Why?
When the lights turned back on, we exited the room. He remained quiet, and it bothered me. It was too awkward for me. I spotted a stand that sold Captain America merchandise, which gave me an idea.
I swiftly turned to him. "Can you come with me to buy some stuff?" I asked, pointing to the stand.
He gave me a thin smile. "Sure." Halfway to the stand, I stopped.
What if he followed me because he wants to be nice?
"You know what, never mind," I uttered, turning back around.
He took taken aback at my sudden change of mind. "Genesis, you're not gonna buy anything?"
I shook my head. "Nope. It's a waste of money. Besides, the actual is here," I gestured to him. "I can just take your things."
It was awkward silence between the two of us as I attempted to make a joke.
I felt my face turning red and hot. "Yeah...this is embarrassing," I muttered, avoiding his eyes.
