"That's so much better they've now turned the music off," Jay said, as I walked into our lounge. "Honestly, they just had no manners."
I shuffled across the carpet to sit next to them on the sofa. They were watching reruns of 90210, sharing a bowl of popcorn between them. They offered me the bowl and I chewed on a few pieces, unable to erase the boy's face from my mind.
Wait, he did have a name. Ash.
But seriously, he was so charming!
Why was I so obsessed with this guy I'd only just met! He wasn't even that special, right? I mean, there must've been loads of other guys like him all over the entire earth! Plus, he probably thought I was really strange - I didn't even talk to him properly! He probably had a girlfriend anyway; I thought he was a player, right? And I genuinely couldn't tell the last time he washed.
"Hello? What's wrong with you? You look like a lost puppy," said Maisie, waving her hand in front of my face.
I didn't know if I should tell them about Ash. I mean, what reason was there not to? He was so fit! Only, apart from being neighbours, there weren't going to be many times we would really ever meet. Except maybe to go tell them to shut up, only I'd just proven that I was pathetic enough not to be able to do that. All I could manage was a feeble It's just a bit loud.
What was I thinking? Why didn't I just yell down the block? No doubt their horrific noise would start any minute! And then I'd have to go and complain again and be faced with Ash, and be unable to speak again! Why was I so pathetic? I wasn't that shy around anybody else! Why was Ash different?
Why did he keep conquering my thoughts? Go away! Leave my brain alone!
"What were the neighbours like?" Jay asked.
Beautiful. Charming. Funny.
Jay raised her eyebrows, expecting an answer. I shook my head, closing my eyes shut but Ash's face remained in my mind with HD pixelation quality. Aaaargh!
"Okay, so I talked to the guy and he was really, really fit!" I finally said.
"No way," said Jay. "Do you like him?"
"Jay! Don't be stupid! I've only just met him!"
"Well, nobody's a match for Nathan," Jay said in a sugary sweet voice.
"Yeah, when are you guys going to get married? You've been together for so long!" Maisie said.
Jay blushed and we all laughed. Jay suddenly sat upright and looked at me. "But seriously, was he that fit?"
"I thought he was really fit," I said. "I can't get him out of my mind!"
"I want to go see him," said Jay.
"Is he really that fit?" Maisie asked.
"I'm sure he is - let's go!" Jay said enthusiastically.
"We can't just turn up on their doorstep with no reason!" I yelled. Honestly, they were being ridiculous! Ash would think of us as so strange, especially after my chat with him. Not really a chat, was it - more a one-sided dialogue to him with me literally falling at his feet because he was so stunning. The more I thought about him, the more beautiful I imagined him and the more I kept thinking of him.
"Well, we need an excuse then," Jay said.
"What though?"
"Well, since we've just moved, we could go ask them for something, like a can opener or something," Maisie suggested.
