Having been in this flat for less than a week, I was already going out of my mind.

The neighbours downstairs were an absolute pain – they were always loud and noisy, their loud music leaking into our flat, twenty-four seven. Wearing headphones with heavy rock music blasting out at full volume did nothing.

As I sat down with my textbook and a pad of paper, the neighbours were at it again with their “beats”. I rolled my eyes and slapped my textbook shut and stood up. That was it – I was going to go see exactly who these neighbours were and have a huge rant. Whilst some people had to study for important university degrees, others obviously didn’t.

“Oh for goodness’ sake!” I heard Jay yell from her room.

          “What?” I asked.

“Those neighbours downstairs! They’re so blooming noisy!”

          “I AGREE!” Maisie yelled.

“Well, I’m going downstairs to complain!” I called.

          “Thank God!” they both replied.

I slammed the door as I exited our flat and quickly skipped down the stairs to the floor beneath us. Music was escaping out through the walls and I sighed, and inhaled deeply before I loudly knocked on the door. I patiently waited, rehearsing exactly what I was going to say in my head.

Excuse me, could you please just SHUT UP? You’re so bloody loud it’s actually UNBELIEVABLE. Honestly, some people have THINGS TO DO, other than just make noise all day.

After a slight delay, the door opened and I was greeted with a tall, lean guy, dressed in a vest top and baggy tracksuit bottoms, with soft brown hair and dark eyes which glinted in the light. He smiled and held his hand out, looking a bit too happy, as if he were a kid on Christmas day.

I was all ready to launch into my rant but I found myself unable to speak – what was wrong with me?

“Hi, I’m Ash,” he said brightly. “I don’t think we’ve met, right?”

My throat dried up and I reluctantly shook his hand. I didn’t understand what was wrong with me – he was definitely not my type. I mean, hello?! He looked like a total player, off with a new girl each week and I wasn’t sure if he had washed within the last forty-eight hours.

“I just came… um, to ask if you could, um, maybe, uh… lower the volume of your music? I, uh, we… um, thought it was just a bit loud,” I said, my voice high pitched.

Honestly, what had happened to me? I cursed at myself in my mind – my voice was so bloody weird! And my language! Just a bit loud? Was I insane? It was so bloody loud you could hear it from ten thousand miles away.

He laughed, the sort of laugh which made you want to laugh along, even if you were totally annoyed at him. “Sorry, we’ll lower it,” he said cheerfully. “We’re generally pretty loud people. Sorry about that. Do you live upstairs?”

          “Um, yeah,” I said.

“I’m guessing you moved in fairly recently?”

          “Uh, yes.

“You don’t say much, do you?” he said, smirking. I almost died. They way his eyes lit up, the way his smile quirked up – I slapped myself subconsciously. What was wrong with me, honestly?!

“Do you want to come in? It’s a bit messy but –”

“Its fine,” I said hurriedly, regaining my sense of speech. “But thanks anyway.”

“Sure thing. Well, I’ll see you around,” he said, shrugging.

Honestly, what was this boy doing to me?!
