Chapter Three

The Reunion

When I finally woke in the morning, it took me a while to wonder where I was and why my feet hurt so much. I looked on the floor and saw the pile of clothes in a heap where I had just stepped out of them, before washing my almost black feet and hopping into bed last night. I was glad I'd switched my phone off last night when I turned in on and saw 10 new messages. All from Jay. I debated with myself to see if I should just listen. I listened to the first one, it was all pleading, saying he didn't really mean it, to come 'home'. I skipped the others and went to the last one. This one, sounded like he had totally lost his temper, swearing and calling me a whore and saying he was better off without me. I quickly deleted all the messages and put the phone onto silent. I think I'd leave him to come down off whatever he had taken and to cool down. Also I didn't think I would have to will power to say no to him at the moment. My resolve was already crumbling, my heart trying to take over from my head. I would be strong! I would!

As I headed to the kitchen, a bleary eyed girl suddenly appeared out of the other bedroom. "Ali! You nearly gave me a heart attack!" I shouted. Ali gave me one of her huge grins her green eyes nearly matching mine in colour. In fact we looked very similar, same build and height, same eyes, but she was blond to my dark hair. "Hay, I do live here you know! More then you do, I should be the one jumping out of my skin!" Ali was like a sister to me and a brilliant flat mate. She didn't ask why I was home, (I was never home on a Sunday) she just raised one eyebrow to show that she was aware something was up and followed me into the kitchen to make a coffee for her and a tea for me.

Without a word she passed me my cup and headed out to the sitting room. It was really small, all we could afford, but really cosy. I followed and sat on the sofa, tucking my sore feet up and under me.

"OK, OK, I give in, stop with the torture, I'll tell you everything!"

Ali smiled, still not having said a word, she knew I couldn't bear not to tell her everything that was happening in my life and so I did, leaving nothing out from the previous night.

"So his voice was inside your head, then he was standing in front of you?! Are you sure it was the same voice?"

"If you heard it, you couldn't ever mistake it again."

"Did you take anything?"

"ALI! NO! Least not that I'm aware of."

"Hmmm, I wouldn't mind meeting Mr Sexy." The goofy grin was back on her face.

"Hay he's my fallen guardian angel!" Pretending to be all cross but laughing helplessly.

My phone started vibrating, I glanced over at the caller ID and saw it was Jay. I ignored it, he really knew how to kill the mood. Ali just raised her eyebrow again and I pulled a face at her.

"So! I think we should go out for the day. You look like you could do with some fresh air and sunshine. You look like death warmed up!"

"Gee you sure know how to make a girl feel good" I said smiling as I unwrapped myself from the sofa and headed to my bedroom to get dressed. This is what I missed. Just the simple life, a good friend and an adventure to go on. No dramas!

We jumped into Ali's car, music blasting and headed for Exmoor to run wild like two silly children. It was just what the doctor ordered.

The next week I concentrated hard at my course. Instead of just turning up at campus for the lectures then running off again, I stayed on site, catching up with my friends and working hard on catching up on all my course work. I couldn't believe how far behind I had got, and I was really annoyed at letting it slip. I mean, men came and went, but an education set you up for life. Wasn't that what my parents always said. Maybe then did know something. Maybe! At least I was bright, so it wasn't too hard, I just had to put in the hours.
