Chapter Sixteen - Weeding Out
Angelo's POV
Lily took the news that I had to go out remarkably calmly. Alarm bells started going off.
"You sure you are going to be OK by yourself? Promise me that you are going to stay the flat and not let anyone but me back in."
"I promise" her tired voice answered me.
Well it had been a long day for her, so maybe she was just worn out. I tried probing her mind, but it was just all a whirl of pictures and feelings, not making any sense at all.
Only as I was leaving that it hit her. Rapping her arms round my body, she buried her face into my top. Slowly her head lifted and her eyes sought mine. "I promise to stay here and not do anything stupid, if you promise to come back in one piece to me....I don't know what I'd do if anything happened to you." The metallic smell of her blood reached my nose, as her top teeth bit into her bottom lip. Automatically my mouth moved to her warm neck, my lips just brushing the skin before my control stopped my teeth sinking into her. The desire to feel her warm, beating blood slipping past my lips and down my throat was hard to bear. I held her tight, every muscle in my body frozen until I was sure that the bloodlust was back under control. I should feed soon, my head was spinning.
Lily wrapped her fingers in my hair, holding me close as well. Not minding that I hadn't replied. No fear in her body. Just total trust.
I knew what she was feeling. I'd gone through similar thoughts after hearing her phone message. A life without Lily seemed bleak. I knew that as she was human, that one day she would be gone, but I was selfish and wanted more time with her.
It was getting late. Sighing "I have to go Lily. I promise that I'll do everything in my power to come back to you."
Her large green eyes met mine again and she smiled. "Good, because you always keep your promises!" She kissed me gently on the cheek, blushing slightly at her forwardness. Tempted to kiss her properly, I only held back because I wasn't sure if I could stop.
She waved me good-bye and once I'd heard the door lock and deadbolt slide into place, I set off, patting myself on the back for having the restraint not to kick the door down early.
Cutting off all thoughts of Lily now, (although it was hard as the inside of my helmet smelt of her soft scent), I pushed the bike on towards the other side of town and where I was meeting Eric and the small hand picked group of loyal vampires, stopping only for a quick feed on the way.
This was the confrontation that Eric had foreseen all those months ago. With Lily's memories of the place, we had a rough idea of the internal layout (although not what was upstairs). I'd been doing some scouting round and felt confident enough that the number of vampires guarding the place was small. It would be like pulling a weed out. It was best to take it out before it got too big and grew big roots. It is harder to remove then.
I cut the engine and allowed the bike to glide down the road, so as not to alert the sentries. Now nearer, I stopped and stashed the bike for a quick get away. I'd also left a stolen car on the other side of the house, just in case.
Slipping into the shadows, I made my way down to where Eric and twelve other vampires were. Eric just raised an eyebrow at my late arrival and I bowed my head in apology. My eyes ran round the ring of vampires, most I recognised by sight, seeing them round Eric's mansion, but Abby was the only one I knew really well. She smiled at me, excited at the thought of the forthcoming fight. I smiled back as I made my way to her side, raising an eyebrow at her scratching absent-mindedly at the inside of her wrist. She rolled her eyes in response and pulled her sleeve further down to cover the small blue numbers tattooed on the inside of arm. Abby was a true fighter and a survivor, and I was glad, not for the first time that she had chosen to be turned when I offered her the choice.
