Part 2: Blue
Less than an hour later there was a knock on the door. The two twins froze not expecting to hear such a sudden noise. Matthew frowned," Is Dad home?" He asks his sister. Marie glances out the windor and responds by donning a similar expression and shaking her head her dark blue eyes shining confusion. Matthew couldn't believe he hadn't really noticed her eyes having changed. They had previously been a bright green, the same colour as his own eyes. A second round of knocks suddenly broke the silent air bringing Matthew back to reality.
"If Dad isn't home then who's at the door?" He asked Marie. She shakes her head a second time,"I don't recognize them. They look important though. Stuffy suits, a weird navy blue."
"The suits are navy blue?"
"Yeah."
"Ew."
"Agreed."
"......we should answer the door right?"
Marie frowns and looks torn staring to speak but failing. She tries again,"Do you believe what your friend told you on the radio?"
Matthew's eyes shifted down to the ground. He did believe Amani. A lot. Something inside of him was screaming that what his friend had told him was the truth. He had even gone to see for himself and that fact was proven. He sighed,"Yes."
Marie nodded,"Then we can't trust them. They're obviously government."
Silence fell between the two repeatedly broken by the knocks on the door, each one getting more aggressive. It sounded like they had some kind of battering ram and were breaking down the door. From downstairs glass shattered.
"Shit." Both twins said together hearing the window break and they moved at the same time heading out of the room. They paused as they heard heavy footsteps scaling the stairs and rushed back to the room. Marie glanced around the room, frantic, and grabbed the blanket from Matthew's bed. Matthew saw what she was trying to do and opened the window facing away from the front door. Marie tied the blanket onto the bed frame to secure it as Matthew barricaded the door. The two worked in perfect unison, seeming to know what the other was thinking seconds before either could have a chance to say it.
"If you are in this house identify yourself." A monotone and official sounding voice said from the hallway in front of the door. Soon this person would be trying to get into the room, Matthew could feel it. He knew that if they got inside the next events would be very unpleasant, deadly even.
Marie slid out of the window holding onto the blanket to safely deposit herself onto the nearest roof. From there she slid down to the ground on a rain duct, praying that it would hold. Matthew landed on the ground moments after her and they both ran as fast as they could around the backside of the house. A scuffle could be heard from the front door and the crackle of radios perused them.
The twins maneuvered quickly away ducking behind every item that could hide their presence while still moving forward. Multiple heavy footsteps followed them, quite a bit more rushed then the first ones had been. Radio static resounded again and Matthew picked up part of the conversation,"..too many houses to pursue....residential area...........one female one male....protocol.....keep in mind that the female could be very dangerous.....code 110.....ending pursuit."
The footspets faded but the twins continued to run. Their breath became laboured quickly and Matthew's chest ached. He realized the only reason he had been able to run so far was because of adrenalin. He was not an active person and the sudden Sprint was a shock on his body. Dispite her claimed skill at sports, Marie was in a similar condition. Matthew mentioned this sarcastically and earned himself a sudden display of Marie's middle finger.
Not far from the Bolin family house there was an old building being renovated. Unfortunately for the government, due to a previous error in the piping when the building was first built, the project had to be put on hold until a proper plumber could be hired. This left the building open and safe for any desperate teens to take shelter in.
Matthew and Marie crawled past the caution tape and walked into the building, soon finding a section that hadn't been fully demolished yet and even had some left behind couches and chairs from when the building was still in use. Marie claimed the largest couch and informed Matthew that he could "suck it" and tasked him with finding water.
With the use of a few profanities Matthew obliged, waking over to where there was a convenient vending machine,"They really didn't clear this place out very well before they started demolishing it." Matthew remarked once he returned back to the room the twins had made their home base. Marie nodded,"Pretty weird. You'd think they would have sold everything by now."
The twins found some blankets in a nearby closet and used them to cover up the few windows and to cover themselves in.
"It's pretty late you know. We ran a bit further than we thought we had." Marie commented as she secured a blanket over the window closest to her couch,"we should probably sleep."
Matthew scoffed and was about to make a "sleep is for the weak" joke when he noticed Marie's expression. He had never really seen true fear on her face until that moment. Marie, a normally confident and perky person, looked small, tired, and nervous. That's when it hit Matthew the situation they were in. They had just run away from home. From the authorities. They were basically criminals. A shiver ran through Matthew's body and he nodded to Marie,"Yeah....Let's sleep."
He wasn't sure if he would be able to.
